Obituary for Margaret Megginson Fowler
Margaret Megginson Fowler was received gently and peacefully into the loving arms of God on Friday, August 14, 2020, at The Arbor Skilled Nursing Facility in Ridgeland, Mississippi, at the age of 92. She was born in Jackson, Mississippi, to Oscar Gray and Gladys Lindsey Megginson. Margaret grew up in Jackson and graduated from Central High School. Soon thereafter she went to work for the Veterans Administration assisting veterans returning from World War II. Later in life she worked in the printing department at the Mississippi Legislature as an office assistant. Shortly after entering the workforce she met Jack Fowler, a young dentist fresh out of the Navy, returning to Jackson to practice with his father. They married, had four sons, and would celebrate 64 years together. Margaret and Jack provided their boys with a stable and loving home. She worked hard to teach her sons solid core values as she gave her children a better life than she had growing up. She loved her family deeply and never hesitated to defend it fiercely. She was its core strength. Margaret and Jack were among the founding members of St. James’ Episcopal Church where she remained a communicant for her entire adult life, participating in nearly every aspect of planting and growing what became a vibrant church community. Margaret served as a licensed Episcopal lay reader, chalice bearer, vestry member and member of the choir. By her devotion she taught her sons what it meant to experience the love of Christ, especially in the act of kneeling at the rail to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Margaret and Jack helped establish the Cursillo movement in Mississippi, often sharing their love of Jesus Christ at Cursillo weekends and Ultreyas. A true Southern lady, Margaret engaged in many outside interests including music, art, and travel. A self-taught artist, she was a talented painter and loved using her talent to create gifts for others with arts and crafts. As an avid golfer, Margaret was active in the Colonial Country Club Ladies Golf Association. She and Jack played courses all over the United States and abroad. Together they made trips to England, Scotland, Germany, Russia, and China. Margaret is survived by her sons James Walters Fowler (Helen) of Madison, Mississippi; Gray Megginson Fowler (Babs) of Madison, Mississippi; and Charles Thomas Fowler II (Lynn) of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother Robert Mitford Megginson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack Boyle Fowler, her beloved son Jack Boyle Fowler Jr., three brothers, Charles Megginson, David McNeil Megginson, and Oscar Gray Megginson Jr., and one sister Martha Megginson Sparks. The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, caregivers and staff at The Orchard Retirement Community, The Arbor Skilled Nursing Facility, Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, and Baptist Hospice Services, for their compassionate care. A private service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 26th, at St. James’ Episcopal Church. The service will be available via livestream at https://www.facebook.com/stjjax.org. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. James’ Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 3921 Oakridge Drive, Jackson, MS 39216; or the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Building Fund, 432 Bozeman Road, Madison, MS 39110.
