Obituary for MSGT Walter C. Ham, Jr. USAF, Ret.
Walter C. Ham, Jr., died Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Hospice Ministries. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Colonial Heights Baptist Church with burial following with full military honors at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Forkville. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and will resume at 12 Noon Saturday at Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
Mr. Ham was born on May 4, 1946, in Meridian, the son of the late Walter and Lena Ham. He graduated Northeast Lauderdale High School, where he lettered in football. Mr. Ham continued his education at Meridian Junior College. After graduation, he accepted a position with Mississippi Power and Light (Entergy) working throughout his career in Greenville, Jackson and Madison. He remained with Entergy until his retirement.
A veteran, Mr. Ham faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force. Stationed at Key Field in Meridian, he worked in aviation and communication units. He retired from the Air Force after 31 years, obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant.
Mr. Ham was a longtime member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church. He enjoyed assisting with the Children’s Ministry on Sunday, Wednesday Nights, summer camps and was affectionately known as “Papa Ham.”
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, golf, flying radio controlled airplanes and was a faithful Atlanta Braves fan.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Rozanne Ham.
Survivors include his wife Frances of Madison; son, Kiley Ham and his wife Tami and their children, Abby, Jake and Elyssa all of Brandon; son, Steven Ham and his wife Faithe and their children, Ainsley and Jackson all of Starkville, MS. He is also survived by a sister, Sherry Hobson and her husband Ed of Pearl.
