We ask on behalf of the family that you keep your comments uplifting and appropriate to help all who come here to find comfort and healing.
Luella joined her late husband in heaven in the early morning hours of January 7, 2023. In the days before her passing, she was surrounded by her family and devoted caregivers.
Luella was 92 and a half years young as she often would say. She was born on June 11, 1930, in Cloutierville, Louisiana to James and Azalea Vercher. Luella, and her brother Kelly and sister Lucille lived and survived tumultuous times. She graduated from Natchitoches High School in Northern Louisiana and furthered her education becoming an X-Ray Technician in Shreveport, Louisiana.
While in Shreveport, she met a young airman, who was to become the love of her life, Floyd Doolittle. The were married for nearly 60 years at the time of his passing in 2011, and raised two sons, whom they are survived by, Floyd Doolittle (Susan) and Roger Doolittle (Angela). Throughout their marriage, Floyd and Luella travelled both domestically and abroad, often with their sons, their granddaughter, Kirsten Doolittle, and great granddaughters Rivers and Gracie Bell Carney.
After retirement, Floyd and Luella moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Jackson, Mississippi, where they both became involved in St. Francis Catholic Church. They were immediately welcomed by their church family. Luella became a volunteer tutor for children in Camden, MS. She also was an active supporter of St. Francis’ Knights of Columbus chapter, of which Floyd was a participant, and worked tirelessly to support the Knights’ work for the church and community. After Floyd’s passing, Luella joined St. Francis’ Mary and Martha bible study, where she enjoyed years of weekly fellowship and friendship.
After Floyd’s passing, Luella lived a fiercely independent life for nearly 10 years, travelling in the summers to Montana with Roger, Angela, Floyd, Susan, Kirsten, Rivers, Gracie Bell, and of course, her beloved dog Skipper. She is missed terribly but her loving legacy will be carried on by her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with a family graveside service following at Parkway Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
