Obituary for Lorelei Harris Spikes
Lorelei Harris Spikes died on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. She was 63.
A native of Wyandotte, Michigan, and born December 31, 1956, she was the daughter of Wilma Landrith and the late Bobby Harris.
Raised in Michigan, she moved to Brooksville, Florida, where she graduated high school. As a young girl, helping to care for her father after a severe accident, Lori realized that she possessed the desire and the caring qualities needed to serve those suffering from health issues.
She attended Samford University in Birmingham, where she completed her Associate Degree Nursing and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Ida Moffett School of Nursing. She spent many years as an ICU RN. Soon after choosing to follow Jesus, Lori felt God’s call to serve overseas as a missionary. She took her first step in that direction by serving in Honduras for two years as a Journeyman Nurse with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. During that service, she met her future husband, Jim Spikes, who was also part of the same program. After their marriage in 1983, Lori served with Jim in a church in East Texas. Very soon, Lori and her husband returned overseas and embarked on a nearly three decades long ministry with the International Missions Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in various cities in Europe, Chile, and Costa Rica.
Lori’s love and commitment to healing others through her skilled nursing and caring hands spanned the globe. Throughout her mission career, she found multiple ways to use her training, skills, and compassion to help and bless those around her. She was passionate about Jesus and wanted all to come to know Him as she did. She always saw nursing as one of her primary vehicles to share God’s love in tangible actions and ministry. On her return to the USA in 2016, she returned to active participation in Baptist Nursing Fellowship. In 2018, the organization selected her to serve as its National Executive Director and Treasurer. She was committed to Baptist Nursing Fellowship and remained dedicated to the revitalization and direction of the program. In 2019, the Ida Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University recognized Lori’s life and achievements by honoring her with the “Courage to Care” award.
Lori manifested the love and compassion of Christ Jesus for others. She was a devoted wife to Jim and a loving mother to her three daughters. To her grandchildren, she was their beloved "Nana," whom they adored. “Nana Camp” was a highlight for all of her older grandchildren. At all levels and in every circumstance, Lori had a gift of making people feel loved and accepted. She sacrificially gave of herself through her actions.
In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Harris.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Jim Spikes, of Clinton, MS; daughters, Amanda Johnson (Stephen), of Memphis; Allyn Farmer (Cole), of Memphis; and Andrea Spikes, of Nashville; grandchildren: Ellis, Mabel, & Nathaniel Johnson and Ethan & Agnes Farmer; mother, Wilma Landrith, of Clinton; brothers, Randy Harris (Pam), of Spring Hill, Florida and Todd Harris (Sheri), of Spring Hill, FL; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
With concern for others' well-being and health, as Lori would want it, the family will have a Private Graveside service on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. The service will be streamed live on the Sebrell Funeral Home Facebook page at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park.
