LIBBY SMITH SUTHERLAND
Libby Smith Sutherland, age 76, of Canton, Mississippi, passed away on October 27, 2022. Libby was born September 15, 1946, in Lexington, NC. Her father, John Franklin Smith, and mother, Betty Russell Smith, and four siblings, Barbara Smith Proctor, Nora Smith Ogburn, John Franklin Smith, Jr. and Betty Necaise all preceded Libby in death.
Libby attended and graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1964. She then attended a girls private Junior College, Marjorie Webster Junior College, in Washington, DC. Upon graduating from Marjorie Webster in 1966, she attended the University of Georgia where she earned a BS in English in 1968. Upon graduation from Georgia, she worked as a Flight Attendant with Delta Airlines stationed in Chicago, Illinois. She met her future husband, William H. Sutherland, Jr., on a stop over in Jackson, Mississippi. They fell in love, married, and had 53 wonderful years together, as husband and wife. They shared four children, Elizabeth Hollin Goodwin (John) of Apex NC, William Hudson Sutherland, III (Tara) of Haymarket, VA, Ashley Brandon Sutherland (Danny)of Bauxite, Arkansas, and, Katherine Craig Chadwick ( Price) of Madison, MS. Libby had nine grandchildren. She was very proud of all of her grandchildren and followed their activities and accomplishments on a daily basis. She was very proud of each one of them and loved them very much.
Libby was an avid reader, reading 120 or so books per year. She read across the spectrum from up and coming to undiscovered southern writers to Japanese mystery writers. Reading was an important part of her life. Earlier in life she volunteered as a tutor in the adult reading program. She helped several adults learn to read. To help someone to learn to read was one of the highlights of her life.
She also loved gardening and shopping for unusual plants for her planting zone.
Libby will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
The immediate family will have a private memorial for Libby and her final resting place will be in her native State of North Carolina, a place that she loved until her last moments on this earth. She would ask that you remember her by reading a good book or planting a tree.
