Obituary for Laura J. Magee
Laura J. Magee,83, art educator/administrator , died on May 2, 2022, after a sudden illness. Born May 10, 1938, in Lake Cormorant, MS, she spent her early years in Tylertown, Summit and New Orleans, LA. She received a BFA Newcomb College of Tulane University, New Orleans, MA from LSU, Baton Rouge, LA. and Ed. D. Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ majoring in Design, Art, and Art Education. Following a short stint teaching in Webb, MS, Laura moved to Des Moines, Iowa, then Pittsburgh, PA. In 2008, she retired home to Jackson, MS to be with close family and friends. According to her notes, parents Julius E. Magee and Ottomece Price Magee Leverett taught strength, survival of hardship/set back and with love of family and friends, she would survive and succeed. Indeed, she did. Welcomed in Jackson she was promptly involved in the community, church and social activities. Known for delightful gatherings , food and drink, she entertained often. She was a member of AAUW Book Circle, Meh Lady Luncheon Club Laura was preceded in death by her parents and cousins Dr. Carl Gustav Evers, Gus Evers and Nelson Crump. She is survived by cousins Jan(Ella) Magee Evers , Katy Magee Johnson(William), Karen Evers (Bryan Robertson), Julie Evers Crump, Charlie Crump, Chris Magee Kirkland (Thomas) stepbrother Jim Leverett (KiYoung), NY,NY. She is also survived by close friends, Curtis Wilkie, Margaret Lilly Blount, Ellen McLean, Ralph C. McDaniel and a host of others too numerous to count. She was a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be held at St. Philip’s, Tuesday, May 10, (her birthday). Visitation begins at 1:00 pm in Bush Hall followed by the service at 2:00 pm. Interment will be in the Columbarium outside the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in memory of Laura Magee, New Stage Theatre.
