Obituary for L C James
LC James, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Christmas Day 2021 at home in Ridgeland, Mississippi. LC was generous, charming, funny, and full of life. He loved Christmas, gifting better than Santa ever could and decorating in grand style every year. LC was born on February 27, 1945, in Picayune, Mississippi. He was the second of four children of Charles Edwin and Lessie Mae James. He graduated from Picayune Memorial High School and was awarded the Crosby Memorial Scholarship, a four-year academic scholarship. Coming from humble origins and hearing of the scholarship, LC said it was the only time he saw his father cry. The quote under his senior picture in the yearbook said, "If LC's brain was dynamite, he could blow up the world."
After graduating from the University of Southern MS, he entered the United States Air Force, serving four years during the Vietnam Era. After discharge from service, he enrolled at Ole Miss and graduated first in his law school class at the University of Mississippi Law School in 1973.
LC practiced law for 45 years in the greater Jackson area and was the senior attorney at his law practice of James & O’Brien Family Law Group. LC received numerous professional awards in the area of family law including “Super Lawyers of the South” and national recognition as a “Top 10 Attorney” from the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys. LC won the "Top 10 Attorney Award" for Excellence in the field of Family Law in 2019.
LC was a fierce competitor, especially on the tennis court. He was a long-time member of the River Hills Tennis Club and competed consistently at the USTA state and regional level. In addition to tennis victories, LC enjoyed collecting antiques, including art and rugs. He had a huge collection of art, always taking the opportunity to support local artists. LC had a wonderful back story for every piece he collected.
When he wasn't in the courtroom, playing tennis, or shopping, LC could usually be found enjoying sports, especially college football and basketball. He took every opportunity to watch his grandchildren compete in soccer, volleyball, and basketball. LC also loved sharing meals, which usually included dessert, with friends and family. He was known for his sweet tooth and expertise in local dessert menus.
LC was a member of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson where he and Barbara participated in the Meals on Wheels program in the Metro area.
LC is survived by his loving wife Barbara and her sons Alex and Matthew Collum. Children with his former spouse Shelia Wagner include, son David James (Transito) of Madison, MS; daughters: Rachel Clevenger of Birmingham, AL, and April James of Los Angeles. Grandchildren include Noah and Macie James of Madison, MS; and Cassidy Clevenger of Birmingham, AL. Nieces and nephews include Bridget Kobs Harris and Brent, Madison, MS; Rodney King and Ashlie of Picayune, MS; Belinda Jarolimek and Clayton of Stafford, VA. Sisters Clara Jean Webb (Jim) of Anderson, SC; and Linda Kay James Miller (Gary) of Picayune, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Franklin James of Hattiesburg, MS.
A small family funeral service will be held at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, on Thursday, December 30, 2021. A Celebration of Life for LC will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mississippi Kidney Foundation www.kidneyms.org.
