Obituary for Kay Case Boone
Kay Elizabeth Case was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, on May 20, 1939, to Houston and Thelma Case. She died known as Kay Case Boone on August 21, 2018, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was 79 years old and had lived in Jackson, Mississippi, more than 50 years.
Kay graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1957 where she was a class officer, head cheerleader, and Miss BHS during her senior year. She earned a BS in Education at Hendrix College, Conway, Arkansas, in 1960 and a Master of Library Science from the University of Mississippi in 1976. Her 33 year public school career included several years' teaching in elementary classrooms in Brookhaven, Jackson, and North Carolina. She flourished in a very rewarding Elementary Librarian career at G. N. Smith Elementary School in Jackson for 28 years. Following her retirement in 2001, she continued to work part time in several Jackson Public School libraries until 2007.
Kay grew up in the First United Methodist Church in Brookhaven and was active in United Methodist Churches wherever she lived until 1974. That year she was confirmed in the Episcopal Church at St. James' Church, Jackson, where she was fed by the Church's liturgy, until her death. She found great joy in singing in the Choir of St. James' as well as serving with the Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Women and Vestry.
Kay was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma Smith Case, in 1999 and her father, Houston Case, in 2012. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Steve Boone, of Jackson, sons Warren Teague of Brandon, Brad Teague (Gina) of Conway, Arkansas, and Andy Boone (Barbara) of Madison, and a daughter, Jennifer Boone Tomlinson (Andrew) of Clinton,; brothers Jerry Case (Virginia), and Richard Case (Beverly) of Brookhaven and Steve Case (Ellen) of Batesville, Arkansas; 11 grandchildren who dubbed her "Kay Kay" beginning in 1999, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She always claimed Brookhaven roots along with myriad others throughout the world. She loved gathering with family, friends from her Brookhaven graduating class and previous employment relationships, and with anyone who treasured a warm and caring relationship and her infectious smile.
A Eucharistic Celebration of Kay's life will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church, Saturday, August 25, at 12:00. Visitation will be in the Church's Oakridge Hall from 10:30 to 11:45, and a happy earthly celebration will follow the service. Memorial gifts may be made to St. James' Episcopal Church, 3921 Oakridge Drive, Jackson, MS 39216.
