Kay Clements Johnson passed away peacefully at home in Monroe, Louisiana on November 2, 2022. Graveside Service for the family will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park of Jackson at 10:00am on Friday, November 4th. Visitation will be at 12:30pm with Memorial Service to follow at 2:00pm on Friday, November 4th at Highlands Presbyterian Church (1160 Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS).
Kay was born on November 3, 1940, to Louie Clements and Kathleen McIlwain Clements. A Durant, Mississippi native and gifted pianist, Mrs. Johnson, went on to study music education at Mississippi University for Women, formerly known as Mississippi College for Women, “The W”. She married Leslie Thomas Johnson, “Les”, June 7, 1963, and taught music in the Dallas, Texas school system during their early years of marriage until they settled in Jackson, Mississippi. There Kay continued her love of teaching by opening a piano studio in her home. She taught thousands of aspiring musicians who loved her dearly and benefited greatly by her talent. Her students participated in festivals, won awards and scholarships, and many went on to major in music at the university level. Kay was an active member and held numerous leadership roles in the following music associations: Music Forum of Jackson, Senior MacDowell Club, Chaminade Club, Mississippi Federation of Music Teachers, Mississippi Music Teachers Association, and Music Teachers National Association.
Kay was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson until the opening of Highlands Presbyterian Church of Jackson, where she remained a faithful member throughout her life. She taught Sunday school, was a part of many bible study groups and consistently pointed her family to Jesus by her life and example. Lovingly known as KayKay to her grandchildren, she was a prayer warrior and loved nothing more than watching them become young adults who love and serve the Lord. Until her final breath, Kay prayed for and thanked God for her precious daughters, grandchildren, and son-in-law, and her many friends, students and family.
She is survived by daughters Leslie Chunn of Mobile, AL and Katy Martinez (David) of Monroe, LA; grandchildren Amanda Chunn, Reeves Walker, Hayes Walker, and Isabella Martinez; brothers Allen Clements and Mac Clements (Pete); nieces and nephews and a host of friends and family.
