Obituary for Kathryn Day Hurley
Kathryn Day Hurley, age 76, a resident of Terry, Mississippi died Monday, December 13, 2021, at her home after a lengthy illness. Born February 15, 1945, to the late William and Maude Day in Mobile, Alabama, she moved with her family to Charleston, Missouri where she began elementary school at Eugene Field Elementary School, and graduated from Charleston High School in 1963. She was crowned Carnival Queen in 1962 by former Missouri Governor, Warren Hearnes. Kathy met her future husband of 55 years, Michael E. Hurley, while in high school, and the two were married on June 25, 1966, in Charleston, Missouri. Kathy spent the first several years of married life as a homemaker for her husband and two sons, Kevin and Jeremy. She later worked for the Mississippi Rehab for the Blind and then Minact, Inc., where she retired in 2010. Kathy also could add “actress” to her resume, for her role as a widowed ghost in Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s short film, “Mississippi Ghost Tales”. In 2010 and 2012, she became a grandmother, welcoming her first of two grandsons. She was a beloved Nana who beamed with delight anytime she was around her boys. They will always remember their Nana’s laughter and smile and her immense love for them. Kathy and Mike were long members of Meadowbrook Church of Christ where Kathy served as a long-time children’s Sunday School teacher, and where they met so many dear friends. Later, Kathy and Mike joined their neighborhood church Wynndale Baptist, where they have enjoyed attending in most recent years. In addition to her husband, Kathy is survived by her sons, Kevin E. Hurley of Rogers, Arkansas and Jeremy L. Hurley (Allison) of Jackson, Mississippi, grandsons, Ables and Reid Hurley, and her sister, Teresa Day Pender (Gary) of Natchitoches, Louisiana. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, William and Maude Day, her brother, William Mansfield “Bill” Day, and her sister, Diane Day Telker. Kathy will be remembered for her kindness and gentle spirit, her beaming personality and sense of humor, her deep love for her family and friends, and for her faithful servant heart to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Services will be held at Wynndale Baptist Church, 11287 Springridge Road, Terry, MS 39107, on December 17, 2021, with visitation from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and services immediately following at 11:00 am. Contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Mississippi or Wynndale Baptist Church.
