Obituary for Joseph Williams Philips
Please join with family and many friends in mourning the death, and celebrating the life, of Joseph Williams Phillips. Joe passed from a long battle with cancer on Friday, July 13, 2018, at Hospice Ministries. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2018 at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel. Joe was loved by so many: his family, personal friends new and old, as far back as High School and Ole Miss, as well as business and political associates. He will be missed by so many. Joe was born on August 4th, 1952, to Ralph and Mildred Phillips in Jackson, Mississippi, where he grew up to be a Boy Scout, active in Andrew Jackson Council Troop 3, and attended Murrah High School. He graduated with the Class of 1970, was a member of the Mustang Band, and participated in a variety of sports. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Ole Miss, in Oxford, MS. He was also active in Broadmeadow United Methodist Church. Joe amazed everyone with his photographic memory. With quick wit and humor, he remembered everything he ever read; remembered faces and what you talked about the last time you met; and about a million jokes (clean ones). He could easily quote whole scenes of his favorite old classic movies, telling you the title, the characters, and the actors portraying the roles. And he never forgot, and rarely missed celebrating, a holiday or special event in the lives of his loved ones. He will be fondly remembered by so many people, and a whole collection of animals and pets, whom he loved dearly, and they loved him, too. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph T and Mildred Williams Phillips, and a brother, Tom Phillips. He is survived by many close relatives and cousins in Mississippi, Texas, California and Georgia, including his sister-in-law Bou Nga Phillips, and nephews Phavana Phillips and Sanithna Phansavanh, all of the Atlanta area. He is also survived by special friends Chip Pickering and family. Pallbearers are John Albritton, Jeff Gardner, Robert Murphree, Ronnie Hanes, George Norfleet, Jr, Mike McIntyre, Steve Phillips, Will Pickering, and Wade Quinn. To honor Joe’s life, please consider memorials to the Hospice Ministries, Inc of Ridgeland, MS, or the Andrew Jackson Council of the BSA Friends of Scouting.
