John Lansdale Burwell, age 68, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018. He was born on August 30, 1949, in Jackson, MS, to John L. Burwell, Sr. and Louise Burwell. John graduated from Murrah High School in 1968, and later joined the U.S. Army. During his service, he was responsible for the programming of warheads in Ulm, Germany. After his return from service, John married his longtime love, Karen Cummings (daughter of Jim and Ida), of Jackson, MS, in 1973. John had a very special interest in the oil and gas business. He started out as a landman, then became the co-owner of Cumberland Oil with Homer Cummings, and also owned and operated a gas company in Indiana. He was an entrepreneur whose business interests ranged from bringing cable television to the country of Panama, the founding of Annandale Golf Club in Madison, MS, and Emerald Bay Golf Club in Destin, FL. He was also involved with development at Main Harbour Marina at Ross Barnett Reservoir for the past several years. John and Karen also had a special love for thoroughbred horse racing. He bred horses and actively enjoyed going to the tracks across the country with Karen and his friends. John is survived by his wife Karen; sons, Cameron Burwell and Taylor Burwell (Robin); three grandsons, Braden Burwell, Deacon Burwell, and Reece Burwell; brother Charlie Burwell (Lettie); sisters Rebecca Conners (Barry) and Lucy Eigen (Daryl); sister-in-law Helaine Maley (Thomas); and, several cousins, nieces, nephews, and Jack, his best four-legged friend. John lived life to the fullest, loved his family and friends, and sports. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, in the Moyer Room at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Jackson from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The family will have a private celebration of his life at a later date. In lieu of flowers we ask that memorials be sent to Old Friends Equine, 1841 Paynes Depot Road, Georgetown, KY 40324 or to St. James' Episcopal Church, 3921 Oakridge Dr., Jackson, MS 39216 or to a charity of your choice in John’s honor.
