Obituary for John Clifford Grant
John Clifford Grant, 95, passed away Friday, January 22, 2021 at Hospice Ministries. A private family graveside service with military honors will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park South.

Mr. Grant was born on July 12, 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he joined the US Navy, where he served as a corpsman, attached to the 6th Marine division on Okinawa, Japan. After the formal surrender of the Japanese, Mr. Grant stayed in the Navy, where he also served in the Korean War. He was stationed at the Pacific Mortuary Operations in Japan, where he assisted arranging for military personnel to be returned to the United States for burial. Mr. Grant retired from the Navy after 20 years of serving his country.

He returned home and earned his bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees from Mississippi College in English and Speech. Mr. Grant was an educator, teaching at Richland and McLaurin public schools. After he retired, he taught speech at Hinds Community College.

He enjoyed painting, writing poetry, spending time with family, and taking Caribbean cruises.

He was a longtime communicant of St. Therese Catholic Church, where he produced the Young at Heart Newsletter, served in the school cafeteria for years, and taught workshops on reading and writing poetry. Mr. Grant also taught classes on poetry at Riggs Manor Retirement Community, where he was a longtime resident.

After the death of his wife, Marion, he became a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Jackson. He was an office volunteer, and loved the Rev. Dr. Minka Sprague's Bible study.

Along with his wife, Marion, Mr. Grant is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Billy and his sister Sandy.

Survivors include: daughter, Judith Johnson (Derek) of Raymond; son, Greg Grant (Rebecca) of Madison; grandchildren: Jennifer Peacock (Steve) of Raymond; Keith Grant (Dalen) of Madison; Sarah Grant of Denver, CO; Jennifer Weaver (Lynn) of Raymond; and Mike Johnson (Christy) of Saltillo. Great-grandchildren: Stephen Carr (Morgan) of Raymond; Emily Carr of Madison; Brock Peacock (Brittney) of Brandon; Bryce Peacock (Amanda) of Raymond; Blanks Baldwin (Morgan) of Raymond; Isaac Grant of Elberta, AL; Quinlan Grant of Madison; Vera Grant of Madison; Chance Johnson of Saltillo and Mason Johnson of Saltillo and eight great-great-grandchildren.
