Joe Jordan Powell, Jr. was born in Hattiesburg, MS and was a life long resident of Jackson, MS. and son of Joe Jordan Powell, Sr. and Varina Robinson Powell. He attended Duling Elementary, Bailey Jr. High, Central High School and graduated from Millsaps College where he excelled in physics, chemistry and astronomy. He fostered his love of music in marching band, the Millsaps Singers, and later at Galloway and Capitol Street Methodist Churches. He finally found a favorite music and church home at St. James Episcopal Church in Jackson, MS. As an active member of the congregation, he sang with old friends from Millsaps college and Central High School. His lovely tenor voice was in demand at many weddings and services at St. James and around Jackson. He was married to Linda Neely, deceased, of Jackson, MS for 64 years and worked for Mississippi Valley Gas after a stint at Keesler Air Force Base teaching electronics and radar. Valley Gas sent them to Greenwood MS in the late 1950's where he was active in the community.  Later years brought their growing family back to Jackson where he worked downtown at MS Valley Gas’s main office as an engineer and Director of Operations until his retirement.
His daughters are Carol L. Powell, deceased, and Emily Powell Levin. Emily lives in Akron, OH. with her husband Michael and two children, Zoe and Isaac. His son Joe J. Powell III and Karen, his wife, live in Jackson, MS. Joe’s granddaughter, Erin Powell McCain and her husband Cody live in Madison, MS, with their three children, Cameron, Mason and Tyler.
