Obituary for Joaquin Baril
Joaquin Baril, Sr., age 89, passed peacefully at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, on Monday, January 31, 2022. Mr. Baril, also known as Joe to a lot of the Filipino Americans and friends in Brandon, Miss., was born on November 10, 1932 in Bay, Laguna Philippines, the son of the late Clemente Dichoso Baril and Maria Dolores Quintos. He was educated at Bay Central Elem. School in Bay & attended high school from 1st to 2nd year at UPRHS, completing high school at Los Banos High School. He joined the Philippine Army in March 1952. Mr. Baril served in the Philippine Army with honor and distinction for 27 years, achieving the enlisted rank of Master Sargent, and as an officer O-2. He served as ROTC Instructor with the Dept of Military Science & Tactics (mostly at UP Los Banos), and Camp Eldridge / Lalakay, LB from 1973 to 1979.
He married Teresita Barrinuevo Arceo and together they had 10 children (4 girls, 6 boys): Joaquin Jr., Thelma, Jorge, Juancho, Joselito, Juanito, Theresa, Thinia, Jim & Tricia.
Joaquin and his wife immigrated to the US and lived in Brandon, Mississippi with their oldest daughter Thelma and her husband Mickey and in the early 1990's lived in various cities in Southern California. As an active senior citizen, he worked at many local Brandon grocery stores until eventually retiring again. He often attended church at Riverwood Bible Church in Jackson. He had a tremendous capacity to make friends quickly wherever he went. He gained US citizenship status and enjoyed traveling home to see his family in the Philippines and those children who had immigrated to Canada. He is preceded in death by his wife Teresita Baril, his sisters Rosalia de la Cruz and Florentina Villanueva, grandchild Jeremie Baril and son-in-law Sebastian "Choncho" Sanchez. He is survived by sisters Florencia Mesina and Severina Amante, as well as his ten children: son Joaquin Jr. , daughter Thelma Lee (Mickey), son Jorge, son Juancho (Dalisay), son Joselito (Maribeth), son Juanito (Marissa), daughter Teresa Baril Sinnaeve (Ronald), daughter Thinia Lustado (Robert), son Jim, daughter Tricia Galvez (Alex), 22 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He will also be missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
