Obituary for Joanne Salbego Samson
Joanne Salbego Samson recently passed away at St. Catherine's Village in Madison. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church in Jackson with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private for family only. Joanne was born on October 25, 1937, in Rockford, Illinois. She graduated from Marquette University in 1958 and attended Mississippi College School of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor degree in 1980. Joanne practiced law at Wise, Carter, Child & Caraway, P.A. where she developed many long-lasting friendships. While Joanne always cherished her personal and professional friendships, including friendships made through the many clubs and organizations of which she was a member, no one brought her greater joy than her grandchildren. Joanne promised to take each grandchild anywhere in the world they wanted to go and made good on that promise with many continental and international trips with them over the years. Joanne also traveled the world with her friends, including trips to Africa, China, Europe, Egypt, Bali and Russia. From childhood, Joanne was interested in art. But it wasn't until she lived in New Orleans as a young wife and mother that she pursued formal lessons. She returned to her interest in art in the late 1980s and 1990s, while a practicing attorney. At that time, Joanne studied with various local and nationally recognized artists and teachers. Joanne's works have been included in local benefits and have been shown on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and in Louisiana and Illinois. Joanne painted in oils, mainly still-life and flowers. Joanne will be remembered for her generous and inclusive spirit – she always tried to help those in need and regularly invited family and friends (and friends of family and friends) to lunches and dinners at local restaurants and holiday gatherings at her home. Joanne is survived by her three children: Elizabeth Hale Samson of Winter Park, Florida, Roland Francis Samson III (Katharine) of Pass Christian, Mississippi, and Stephen Gray Samson (Ginger) of Madison, Mississippi; and five grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Mia": Gray Samson of Madison, Mississippi, Jordan Samson (Regan) of Gluckstadt, Mississippi, and Caroline Samson, John Samson and Madeline Samson of Pass Christian, Mississippi. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Geraldine Salbego. The family would like to thank all Joanne's caregivers, including the staff at St. Catherine's Village and Amada Senior Care. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Mississippi Museum of Art, 380 S. Lamar Street, Jackson, Mississippi 39201, or Feed My Sheep, P.O. Box 6883, Gulfport, Mississippi 39506.
