Obituary for Joanne Catherine Hartwig
Ms. Hartwig, 82, passed away August 2, 2021, surrounded by loving family.
She was born September 9, 1938, to Iris Gale Swenson Sather and Oscar Arthur Sather in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Joanne started her career as an LPN in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. At the young age of 36 Joanne decided to get sober, after which she received her calling to “practice the principles” and “carry the message” to other suffering alcoholics and drug addicts. She completed counselor training in Omaha, Nebraska, and promptly moved to Mississippi to begin working at Baptist Medical Center Chemical Dependency Unit at its inception in May of 1977, where she held numerous positions – counselor, program manager, director, and codirector – until her retirement in 1998 as codirector of the facility.
During those years, Joanne was extremely dedicated to her job and took extreme pride in her work. She touched the lives of thousands of individuals who went through the program and thought of them, as well as the staff, as extended family.
Once retired, Joanne enjoyed very much spending time with family and friends, working in her yard, and following politics with a passion. She was a great cook known for her specialty pies, especially her homemade pie crust. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and they adored spending time with their “Nan-Nan.” She will live on in our hearts forever.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Scott Wade Hartwig (Sherry); brothers, Keith Sather (Ruth), John Sather (Lynn), Charley Sather (Faith), and Terry Sather; sisters, Mary Sather and Debra Sather; grandson, Bradford Hartwig (Todd); and neice, Morgan Mae Dodds; dearest friends, Mary Ross and Marion Chase.
She is survived by her adoring husband, Terry Gene Hartwig; sons, Kevan Harold Hartwig (Laurie) and Todd Allen Hartwig; daughter, Tamara Hartwig Fulgham; grandchildren, Joshua, Candice, Amber, Brittany, Will, and Nate; great grandchildren, Destanie “Teencie,” Wade, Katie, Sadie, Delaney, Lola, Jasper, Rhea, Logan, Kevan, Madilyn, and Remington.
She is also survived by brothers, Ronald Sather (Kathy), Neil Sather, LaMar Sather (Sue), and Kent “Butch” Sather (Laurie); sister, Susanne Sather Hemphill (Jeff); and sister-in-law, Ruthie Otteson Sather (Keith); and numerous cousins, neices, and nephews; dearest friend Lyn Pruitt.
Forever in our hearts, we will cherish our memories forever.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, 2121 K Street NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20037
