Obituary for Joan Weed Merritt

Mrs. Joan Weed Merritt was born in Grand Bayou, Louisiana on January 2, 1938, the daughter of Robert A Weed and Ottie E Weed. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years David Merritt and two older brothers, Harry and Marvin. Joan entered heaven's gate May 27, 2023.


Joan moved to Laurel, Mississippi during her high school years where she graduated. After high school, she attended Jones County Jr. College before completing her education degree from Mississippi College.


She married David Lee Merritt on June 7, 1958 and they moved to Louisville, Kentucky for his seminary training. During their time in Louisville, she gave birth to a daughter, Wendy. After David completed seminary, they moved back to Mississippi. Two years later they had a son, Mark.


Joan taught elementary school for 25 years across the state, primarily as a first grade teacher. After teaching, she lived in Jackson for more than thirty years. The last two and a half years of her life were spent in Oklahoma with her son and daughter-in-law.


Joan was faithful to Jesus and her church and devoted to her family. She relished working in her yard, growing flowers and watching the birds, even ducks. She was also skilled in cooking, sewing and crossword puzzles.


Survivors include her two children, Wendy Shoff and her husband Jim Shoff of Prarieville, LA, and Mark Merritt and his wife Judith Merritt of Owasso, OK. She has 6 grandchildren: Emily Wohlgemuth and her husband Blake Wohlgemuth of Irvine, CA, Lauren Cranfield and her husband Callen Cranfield of Prairieville, LA, Kimberly Allred and her husband Brandon Allred of Marrietta, GA, Andrew Merritt and his wife Kimberly Johannson of Collinville, OK, Rachel Merritt of Owasso, OK, and Hannah Underwood and her husband Brock Underwood of Haskell, OK. She also has four great grandchildren: Ryder, Grant, and Gage Underwood of Haskell, OK and Dean Cranfield of Prairieville, LA.
