Obituary for Joan Humphreys Parkin
Joan Humphreys Parkin, a lifelong resident of Jackson, Mississippi, passed away at the age of 89 on November 18, 2018 at The Blake in Ridgeland, MS. Joan was born on August 17, 1929 in Erie, Pennsylvania. Her family quickly returned to Jackson where she grew up and graduated from Central High School. She attended Ole Miss and joined Delta Gamma Fraternity and was a cover girl for the Rebel Magazine. Joan married James Edward Parkin, a Jackson pharmacist, on June 17, 1950 at Calvary Baptist Church. Throughout her life, Joan invested her talents as a hostess, amazing cook, gardener, and seamstress to serve her family and community. She was an outstanding mother and loving wife who served God faithfully. Joan was actively involved in church teaching children for many years and has been a member of First Baptist Church Jackson for 45 years. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and active in Delta Gamma. She enjoyed riding horses with her family at Stockett Stables and served as president of both One O’clock Luncheon Club and Le Dejeuner. Throughout her entire life she remained a loving Southern Lady, and she was thankful for all the people at The Blake who cared for her. Joan Parkin was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 63 years, Jim Parkin, as well as her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Coleman Humphreys and two brothers. She is survived by three sons; Jim (Cynthia) of Oxford, Cole (Charlotte) and Doug (Patsy) of Madison; one daughter, Beth Shorter (Joey) of Frederick, Maryland, eight grandchildren: Sam Parkin (Tilly), Lauren Hawkins (Whit), Robert Parkin (Alanna), Cole Shorter, Reid Shorter (Chandler), Scott Parkin, Dalt Shorter, and Hamp Shorter, and one great grandchild, Claire Hawkins. Pallbearers include grandsons Sam Parkin, Robert Parkin, Cole Shorter, Reid Shorter, Scott Parkin, Dalt Shorter, Hamp Shorter and Whit Hawkins. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, November 21, 2018, from 9:00-11:00 at First Baptist Church Jackson in rooms adjacent to the Chapel followed by the memorial service at 11:00 am in the Chapel. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Cookie Jar Fund at First Baptist Church Jackson, or to a ministry of your choice.
