Obituary for Joan Gwyan Covington
Joan Gwyan Covington, 87, was called home to be with our Lord on July 1, 2022. She died of small cell lung cancer and subsequent metastatic brain cancer. She was surrounded by love of family and friends, and much support. Mrs. Covington is the daughter of JP and Gladys Turnage. The family will have a private prayer service and would like to extend an invitation for a Celebration of Life for Gwyan Covington at the home of David and Gigi Buck at 127 Lazy Oak Lane, Madison, MS from 4:00 to 6:00 on Saturday, July 16th.
Mrs. Covington attended Port Gibson High School; as well as, Hinds Jr. College, of which she was a generous supporter throughout the years. She worked as a Plant Manager for Langston Bag Company in Jackson, Mississippi for many years until retirement.
Mrs. Covington had many, many talents, one of which was a strong work ethic and business mind. She was extremely good with finances and numbers. Her home was always immaculate. She excelled in sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Mrs. Covington knew how to use each and every tool in a toolbox. She loved growing all kinds of vegetables and fruits in her garden, and loved canning and freezing them. She had a true talent for being able to do most anything she set her sights on.
Gwyan was one of the most generous persons you'd ever meet. Many people benefited from her loving, open heart and helping hands. Mrs. Covington was an avid reader. She made known her love for Christ and read the entire Bible many times, her favorite story being the one of Naomi and Ruth. Following her love of God, was her love of family, and she would happily tell you about each and every one of their accomplishments, including those of all her great grandchildren. She was not one to shy away from giving her opinion at any time, which added to her unique and interesting character. She could be heard saying, "I don't drink, I don't cuss and I don't smoke, but I will tell a lie." She was very much loved and treasured by so many, many people.
Mrs. Covington is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry Covington; her sister, Laverne Roberts and many friends. She is survived by her three children: Shellie (Joe) Williams; Doug (Becky) Sills; Gigi (David) Buck. Also, her five grandchildren: Tripp (Sara) Sills, Georgia (Nick) Olier, Amanda Sills, Tara (Justin) Lay, Rowdy (Katy) Buck; and seven great grandchildren: Addison, Shelby, Nate, Anderson, Isla, Brooklyn and Caroline.
Mrs. Covington was a steadfast supporter of St. Columb's Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry; therefore, we ask that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the church at the following address: 550 Sunnybrook Road, Ridgeland, MS 39157 or www.stcolumbs.org
