Obituary for Jim Junior Ray
“Coach” Jim Ray, 89, passed away Friday, May 20, 2016. Jim was born on September 15, 1926. Jim attended Howard College (Samford University), Georgia Tech and graduated from Mississippi State University, playing varsity basketball at each school. He had five passions in life: family, gardening, fishing, coaching, and refereeing. Jim was inducted into the MPSCA Hall of Fame for his 55 years of refereeing.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Helon Hodge Ray; son, Bo Ray (Linda) of Everett, WA; son, David Ray (Kate Sharp) of Ridgeland; daughter, Peg Guthrie (Ken) of Madison; granddaughters, Sara Ray, Kelsey Ray (Dustin Michaelis), Jessica Guthrie, Emily Guthrie, and Anna Guthrie.
Visitation will be 2-3 pm Monday, May 23, 2016 at the chapel of First Baptist Church, Jackson. A memorial service will follow at 3:15. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Jackson, MS.
