Obituary for Jason Michael Laughlin
Jason Michael Laughlin, age 43, passed away August 27, 2019 at his home in San Antonio, Texas, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jason was born August 16, 1976 in Jackson, Mississippi, along with his twin brother Justin, to Deborah and the late Mike Laughlin. He spent his childhood in central Mississippi, hunting, fishing, playing soccer, football, golf and baseball, running wild in the streets and causing general mayhem wherever he and Justin went. In his teen years, Jason turned his attention to chasing girls and wrecking cars. He still had time for sports, though, and won the Bruins Award for excelling in multiple sports. He graduated St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1994.
He attended college at the University of Southern Mississippi, graduating in 2000 with a bachelor’s of science degree in computer science with a minor in math. Jason met the love of his life, Amanda Burney, in 2000. Both of their lives were never the same. They began dating and got married in October 2004 and together they created a beautiful family. Gabriel Micheal Laughlin was born in May 2003 and Finleigh Reese Laughlin was born January 2007.
Jason loved to fish. His favorite fishing hole was at Gram and Ban Daddy’s house in Farmhaven, Miss. He was a disc golf enthusiast and won numerous awards and tournaments on the pro level. Once he found disc golf, he dedicated his time and energy to constant improvement and building lifelong friendships on the disc golf circuit.
Jason was a music lover and inexplicably, a Chicago Cubs fan - having never lived in or near Chicago. He enjoyed cheering on the Buffalo Bills and the New Orleans Saints. He loved nothing better than a cold beer, a round of disc golf and a game on tv.
He was a loyal and devoted husband, father, brother and friend, who loved to crack jokes and always made you feel like a part of his family.
He is preceded in death by his father Michael Laughlin, stepfathers Johnny McGowan and Ronnie Ford; grandparents Eunice (Gram) and Erskine (BanDaddy) Poole, Lucille (Nana) and Garland (Boppa) Laughlin, uncle Peter Poole, nephew Owen Lawrence.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Amanda Burney Laughlin, and their children Gabriel and Finleigh; his mother Deborah (Jon) Sylvia; sister Elizabeth (Ken) Covington; sister Wendy (Trey) Lawrence; twin brother Justin (Kathy) Laughlin; nephews and nieces; aunts and uncles; cousins and friends.
Special thanks to dedicated team of caregivers from Oncology San Antonio: his oncologist, Dr. Jaysaree Roa; Ann Ross, RN; Cynthia Hernandez, MA; Patricia Mendez, LVN; Sabita Thapa, NP-C; and Shay Tso, LVN. Thanks also to the awesome and dedicated Vitas Hospice team: Sheila, Michelle, April, Herlinda, Susan, Roger and Leticia.
