James Don “Jim” Gordon, M.D., passed away Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017. He was 81.
Born March 26th, 1936 in Philadelphia, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Edward and Lou Ella Blount Gordon. He was a graduate of Decatur High School, class of 1954, where he was Salutatorian, editor of the school newspaper, played football and trumpet, and was selected Mr. Decatur High School. He attended East Mississippi Junior College where he was a running back on the football team and freshman class president. He then attended Millsaps College in 1956 where he completed his undergraduate studies in one year graduating with Honors with a baccalaureate in chemistry in 1957. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
From a young age, Dr. Gordon demonstrated a keen desire to help those in need and suffering and, thus, expressed his wish to become a physician. He attended Tulane Medical School in New Orleans returning to Jackson to serve an Internship at University Hospital. From 1962-1966, he returned to New Orleans’ Charity Hospital to serve his Residency in Otolaryngology specializing in Head & Neck Surgery.
His love of country found him enlisted in the United States Navy serving as Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Medical Corp – stationed at Beaufort Naval Hospital in Beaufort, SC from 1966 – 1968. While there, he served as Chief of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department.
In 1968, Dr. Gordon returned to Jackson to begin his private practice in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery where he practiced until his retirement in 2015. He will be remembered for his overwhelming capacity to love and care for his patients, his colleagues, and others.
Dr. Gordon was a member and active in the Mississippi State Medical Association, American Medical Association, Central Medical Society, and Mississippi Society of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy; Diplomat, American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery; Board Certified, American Board of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, since 1967; and Board Certified, American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, since 1989. He had been Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology, School of Medicine, University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Gordon had been a resident of Jackson for over 27 years and of Madison for over 20 years. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Jackson.
Jim’s most important endeavor was the love of his family and community. From coaching his sons in baseball to serving as Booster Club President at Jackson Prep, he treasured every moment of his family life. He was an avid Ole Miss fan, sportsman, fisherman, hunter, golfer, and reader. He was known for being a peacemaker. . . his indelible smile, laughter, and friendship will always be remembered.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Ann Gordon Russell; nephew, Dr. Randy Russell; and sister-in-law, Aldine Gordon.
He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Bertha C. Arnold Gordon, of Madison; his children: sons, Dr. Kyle Gordon and his wife, Kathleen, of Jackson; and Dr. Jeffrey Gordon and his wife, Tracey Gordon, PhD, of West Plains, MO.; daughters, Ginger Gordon Buckley and Tara Gordon Antwine, both of Jackson, TN; Cecilia Burell Lagg and husband, Bryan, of Madison, MS; and Dana Burell Castagnos, and husband, Chip, of Orlando; his former wife and the mother of Kyle, Jeffrey, Ginger and Tara: Jo Jeff Ford Gordon, of Jackson; a brother, Ed Gordon, of Madison; twelve grandchildren and a host of loving relatives and friends.
Friends are invited to visitation with the family after 11:30 in the morning on Friday, October 6th, 2017 at Christ United Methodist Church, 6000 Old Canton Rd. in Jackson where a Celebration of Dr. Gordon’s Life will begin at 1 o’clock in the afternoon with the Reverend Calvin Cosnahan, Pastor, officiating.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the loving staff of Beau Ridge Memory Care in Ridgeland for the excellent and compassionate care shown to Dr. Gordon and their family.
