Obituary for James Arthur Matthews

James Arthur Matthews, age 81, died at St. Dominic Hospital on January 7, 2024, in Jackson, MS.


James is survived by his sister, Ginger Glasgow (Jim), of Pearland, TX and his children, James Allen (Donna), of Topeka, KS; David Jones (Bobbie), of Warrior, AL; Charlotte Byrd (Travis), of Brandon, MS; Cindy Hart (Chris), of Richland, MS; Charles Matthews (Amanda), of Florence, MS; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.


James is preceded in death by his parents and (11) siblings.


James was born on March 5, 1942 in Jackson, MS, to parents George and Louise Matthews. He went into the military straight out of school. After being in the service he went to work offshore and later went to work at Sprolles Gutter and Ironworks in Jackson, MS. He eventually became the company owner where he worked until he retired.


James was a great family man and a loving father. He was an active outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. His friends regarded him as a great friend and his family will always affectionately know him as “Uncle Butch”.


A memorial service is scheduled for James on January 10, 2024 at 10:30, at First Pentecostal Church of Jackson, MS. Rev. Greg Frazier will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate James’s life.
