Obituary for J. M. (Jack) Smith
J.M. “Jack” Smith, also known to many as Daddy, Papaw, Daddy Jack & Mr. Frank passed away Sunday afternoon, February 7, 2021 at his home surrounded by his love ones. He was 87 and from Canton, MS.
A native of Union, MS and born December 2, 1933, he was the son of the late Marion Smith and Ava Dee Truhitt Walling. Jack was a strong patriarch of his family, a good friend to all, a man who would give his shirt for a friend. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, who always took care of his children and did the best he could to teach and guide them. He was a quiet and kind gentleman holding the highest integrity in business and in family life. He dedicated many years of his life to helping others and in service to his faith and membership in the Lake Harbor Baptist Church. He had a long-standing relationship with God and was very blessed in his faith to his dying breath. Jack loved to be with family and was always up for fishing, a reunion, a good game of dominoes or gathering with friends. He was an avid fisherman who fished many crappie tournaments with his best friend Buster Waltman. It did not matter if he was on the reservoir fishing with his son or on the bank of a pond fishing with his great grandkids or family, he loved fishing and eating fish. He liked watching a good ball game (basketball, football or baseball), and talking to his grandson about what should have happened in the game. Over the last several years, he spent countless hours coloring beautiful pictures he loved sharing with others. Jack was above all passionate and proud of all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This gentle, loving, caring and wonderful man has left a permanent mark etched on our hearts and will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Hollingsworth Smith; a sister, Jean Smith Peoples; a brother, James Truhitt Smith; and a grandson, Hunter Smith. He is survived by his children Cheryl Whidden, Corpus Christi, TX; Kimberly Hearn (Russell), Madison, MS; Michael Smith (Cissy), Sand Hill, MS; Sabrina Mabry, Birmingham, AL; Billy Joe Watkins (Marley), O'Fallon, IL. Jack had seven grandchildren: Katie Honeycutt, Wes Whidden, Garrett Hearn, Lauren Hobson, Anna Carol Evans, Hollie Collins and Crystal Rockhold. He had eight great grandchildren Presleigh and Ella McClellan, Grey Hobson, Hunt and Vaiden Evans, Ashleigh Rockhold, Elijah and Kipton Collins. Two sisters, Jo James, TX and Alatha Hinson, CA and a brother, Sam Smith, TX. There are also many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to visitation to be held Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at Lake Harbor Baptist Church, Brandon, MS starting at 12:00 and service to follow at 2:00. Burial will be at Old Pisgah Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and volunteers from Baptist Hospice who comforted and cared for Jack in his last days. Memorials may be made to Lake Harbor Baptist Church or Batson’s Children Hospital.
