Obituary for Hollis George Morris
Hollis George Morris, 74, of Brandon, MS, succumbed to cancer on May 12, 2017.
Hollis was born in Truro, MA on April 27, 1943. He graduated from Provincetown High School in 1961 and went on to receive his Bachelor's in Business Administration from Nichols College. While attending Nichols, he was a member of the College Forestry Club & Nichols first undefeated cross country team which earned him induction into their Athletics Hall of Honor. He later completed the Park Service Operations Program at Horace M. Albright Training Center in Arizona, becoming a National Park Ranger. Soon thereafter, he entered the US Army, distinguishing himself by exceptionally meritorious service as a Training NCO responsible for US Army Garrison's training at Fort Monroe, Va. Per his certificate of achievement, "His tireless efforts, willingness to work, military bearing and cheerful attitude won for him the respect and admiration of his subordinates and superiors alike and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of the overall mission of US Army Garrison." Characteristics that he continued to carry throughout his life. After discharge from the army, he settled in Ridgeland, MS where worked as Natchez Trace Parkway Superintendent, retiring in 1999 with 34 years of Park Service. Following retirement, he drove for the Rankin Co School District. He was an avid outdoorsman and belonged to Sandhill Hunting Club.
Hollis leaves behind wife, Marty A. Morris of 39 years; adopted daughter Brooke Gurley & husband Matt Gurley (B'ham, AL); stepchildren Mark L. Oliver and wife Judy (Byram, MS); Lea Ann Robertson and husband Dicky Robertson (Madison, MS); and Mitch J. Oliver & partner Vaught (Ridgeland, MS); brother Robert L. Morris (Finley, OH); sisters Rebecca Whiting (Truro, MA), Joye Daley (New London, CT) and Linnel Nickerson (Truro, MA). He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.
Hollis is preceded in death by his father, Robert H. Morris; mother, Viola O. Morris; brother Collen G. Morris; and sister Letitia Watson.
Visitation will be held at 10am Tuesday, May 16th at Ridgeland First United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 11am.
