Obituary for Gus A. Primos
Gus A. Primos went to be with his Savior on August 10, 2022, at the graceful age of 93. He was born to Mildred and Angelo “Pop” Primos on April 22, 1929, in Gulfport, MS. Gus’s family moved to Jackson in 1930, where he attended Central High School. To those who knew him well it comes as no surprise his high school superlative was “Most Business Like.” He continued his studies at the University of Mississippi, where he was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Upon graduation, Gus married his high school sweetheart, Jonelle Green. The two celebrated 70 years of marriage. He went on to serve as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force in Kunsan, Korea. Upon returning from service, Gus joined his family in the restaurant business. As a young businessman Gus discovered a passion for real estate and a unique vision for the growth of the Jackson metroplex. In 1974 he left the family's restaurant business to pursue his real estate interests in forming, Lakeland Development Corporation.
Gus was a founder and former Chairman of Jackson Preparatory School. He was instrumental in the founding of Woman's and River Oaks Hospitals, where he actively served on the board for many years. He also served on the boards of Trustmark National Bank, The County Club of Jackson, River Hills Tennis Club, and The Petroleum Club. Gus founded The Capitol Investors Club in 1958 which is still active today.
Gus had the foresight to invest in properties in Rankin County before the Pearl River bridge connected the two counties. He was active in the formation of The Court House, Lakeland Yard and Garden Center, Mirror Lake Complex, Office Park East, Meadowbrook Highlands, Dogwood Place, Indian Creek, and countless other subdivisions.
Gus was well known as a visionary, but his greatest investments were in people. He cherished opportunities to mentor and guide acquaintances in their own pursuits and celebrated their successes.
He was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church his entire adult life.
Gus was beloved by his lifelong friends for his sense of humor and his passion for the great outdoors. In the hot Mississippi summers, he would spend countless hours in his vegetable gardens. Gus took particular pride in his lemon trees in his later years. During the fall and winter months, Gus loved teaching his children, nephews, and grandchildren the principles of hunting, fishing, and stewardship of God’s beautiful outdoors.
Gus loved to travel and embraced people and cultures across the world. For over 25 years, Gus and his beloved Jonelle spent their September in one of their favorite places, Chamberlin, Maine. Their frequent trips to Italy and Napa Valley with dear friends created lasting memories.
Gus is survived by his wife Jonelle Green Primos and children Annelle Barnett, Houston Primos and his wife Betsy, Mary Alice Blackmon and her husband Rob, Cissy Prewitt, and grandchildren Robert Blackmon (Maggie), Alice Blackmon, Stephen Blackmon (Elise), Bonnie Blackmon Slay (Parker), Arden Barnett, Gus Barnett, Houston Primos, Jr. (Maddie), Dixon Prewitt, Gwynn Prewitt van der Kleed (Christopher), Grace Prewitt Guerrero (Brooks), and great-grandchildren, West Flautt and Margot Primos and his brother Kenneth Primos.
He was preceded in death by his grandson Truett Scott Primos and son-in-law Dr. Thomas Wendell Prewitt; brothers Aleck and Billy Primos and his sister Mildred Smith.
The family would like to thank Ms. Barbara Brooks and her team of caregivers, Santanna Lacey, Janet Riaz, Cathy Beverly, Shanda Morrow, Patricia Moore, Sammy Ross, Cathy Mozingo, Bobbie Fleming, Carol Stiff and Melishia Brooks for their loving care during the last years of Gus’ life.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 16th at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am with visitation in Miller Hall at 10:00 am. The family requests memorials be made to Reformed Theological Seminary, 5422 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, MS 39209.
