Obituary for Glynn Bernard Cumberland
Glynn Bernard Cumberland of Florence, MS passed away to heaven on January 27, 2018. Glynn was born in 1934 to Luna & D.H. Cumberland in Philadelphia, MS. He attended Bloomo High School where he was Senior Class President and he also attended ECJC. Glynn married Margie Ann Gray in 1954 and had 2 sons. He is preceded in death by parents D.H. Cumberland and Luna Burton Cumberland, older sister Mazell Hall of Pocahontas, MS and younger brother Darth Cumberland of Florence, MS. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years Margie Ann Gray Cumberland, sons Bobby Glynn Cumberland and Randy Markel (Mark) Cumberland of Florence, grandsons Randy Patrick Cumberland and Benjamin Mark Cumberland, younger sister Barbara Thrash of Philadelphia, MS and younger brother Robert Cumberland (Maria) of Ocean Springs, MS, sister-in-law’s Betty Roberts of Port Charlotte, FL and Allie Mae Williamson of Richland, MS. Glynn was a loving devoted husband and father. He moved to Jackson in 1955 and joined Hostess Cupcakes and in 1959 joined the City of Jackson Police Department (JPD). He started out “walking a beat” and retired 36 years later as Deputy Chief of JPD. Glynn also established the first Police Precinct for the JPD in South Jackson. During his tenure with the JPD he was Captain of the Police Training Academy, Detective Bureau, Records, Vice and Narcotics, K-9 unit and many other divisions. He was a member of the JPD Pistol team. He also graduated the 100th class of the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. After retirement from the JPD he worked with the U.S. Marshall’s Service for Judge William H. Barbour, Jr. at the Eastland Federal Court house in Jackson. Glynn was active in his church both at Epworth United Methodist Church and then Marvin United Methodist Church in Florence. At Marvin United Methodist Church he was President of the Mary Bozeman Sunday School Class prior to his illness. Glynn coached Oak Forest Exchange Club Little League Baseball team. He was a water skier and Senior Rated Boat Driver in the American Water Skiing Association South Central Region. Involvement with water skiing began with the Jackson Ski Hawks at Lake Hico in Jackson and moved to the Confederate Ski Club in Florence. He coached both sons Bobby and Mark in competitive Slalom, Tricks and Jumping to the National Water Ski Championships for many years. Some other areas that Glynn was active in was the Shriners for 50 years, Squared Dancing nationally, and was an avid Bowler. Glynn’s family wishes to thank the faithful members of Marvin United Methodist Church and Galloway Memorial United Methodist church for weekly cards, notes of encouragement, personal visits, prayers, order of service, phone calls, texts, and emails. The professional care at Baptist Medical Center, The Blake at Flowood and Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland along with James Polk and staff in Richland was a blessing. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Marvin United Methodist Church, Florence, MS beginning at 12 till 2pm with the memorial service immediately following.
