Obituary for Glendon J. Welch
Glendon Johnson Welch died on Monday, March 29, 2021 at St. Dominic Jackson Memorial Hospital. She was 83.

A native of Tylertown, Mississippi and born on Christmas Day 1937, she was the daughter of the late James Clifton Johnson and Ernestine Dillon Johnson. As an infant, Glendon’s mother would place her in a basket as the family worked the cotton fields. From this day, she developed her strong work ethic that she carried with her throughout her life. She attended Lexie Baptist Church for many years with her parents and brother.

Glendon was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and remained active in fellowship over the years. While at USM, a young man in one of Glendon’s classes waited for her outside the door of the classroom. He had come to the campus from Mississippi State to complete a course which, as he would tell you, was the best decision of his life. He asked her out for a date outside of that classroom and they’ve been inseparable ever since. They were married in 1958 and made their home in Jackson.

Glendon and Lonnie became members of Woodland Hills Baptist Church in 1962. There, she was a fixture and a loving, welcoming face where she served in many capacities, including education secretary and the Pastor’s secretary for over 40 years. She loved people and they felt it. She had a beautiful, gentle, and kind spirit and will be remembered as living the example of her Christian faith.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lonnie Welch, of Jackson; daughter, Michelle Welch Wallace, of Madison; grandsons, John Lindley Marshall III, of Memphis and Thomas Denton Wallace, of Jackson; great granddaughter, Camilla Elizabeth Marshall, of Memphis; brother, James “Jim” Johnson (Alice), of Tylertown; and a host of other relatives and many friends.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 2, 2021 at Fondren Church (the former Woodland Hills Baptist Church) with Rev. Ty Pigott officiating. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until the hour of the service on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Madison, 2100 Main Street, Madison, MS 39110.
