Gladys May Humphries, age 82, went to be with her heavenly father on Saturday, May 13, 2023. She was surrounded by family that loved her very much.
Gladys was born February 12, 1941, in Union, MS to the late Selby and Myrtie May. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, John Dale Humphries, and her five children, Vivian Thornton McGehee, Vickie Brasher (Jeff), Dwight Humphries (Laura), Derek Humphries (Michele), and Russell Humphries (Jenny) as well as her devoted sister, Carolyn D’Aquilla, of Long Beach, MS. She had thirteen grandchildren, Chris Thornton, Mandy Thornton, Bryan Brasher, Samantha Cuvillier, Blake Humphries, Ashley Romanek, Kristen Mosal, Justin Saltzman, Chandler Humphries, Lauren Saltzman, Hailee Humphries, Sierra Humphries, John Humphries and 12 great grandchildren.
Gladys was born in Union, MS and moved to Jackson as a young child. She graduated from Murrah High School, then attended William Carey College. She went on to become a beautician, graduating from Shirley Little Beauty School.
On June 21, 1960, she married John Humphries. As her family grew, she opened her own salon, Broadmoor Beauty Salon, which she had for 15 years before opening a Framing business, Stitch-N-Stuff. The family moved to Nashville for 2 ½ years due to John’s work. Upon returning to MS, she worked at Lakeland Yard and Garden. Her last business endeavor was owner of Custom Floor Design. She was very artistic and after retiring, she spent her free time making gourd birdhouses, Wine Chimes and Jewelry. She loved flowers and planted different flowers every spring. Her back patio was always a showplace. She also loved watching football, especially when her boys were playing. She never missed a game and could always be heard, over everyone else, cheering them on. Gladys loved traveling the world with the love of her life, John Dale. She also enjoyed family trips to the beach and playing in the ocean, although she didn’t know how to swim! She will be remembered as a fun-loving, caring mother and grandmother.
