Obituary for Freeda Smith
Freeda L. Smith was born in Terry, MS on February 18, 1940 to Earnest and Virginia Patterson. She went home to be with the Lord on November 15, 2021 at the age of 81.
Freeda grew up in Terry, MS before marrying her loving husband, Donald Carl Smith, on June 26, 1965. They shared 42 wonderful years together before his passing in 2008. She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and beautiful, Godly soul to everyone. She was tiny, but strong and lovingly known as “Big Maw”, a name bestowed upon her by her special great-grandsons. It fit her “big” personality that was full of love, kindness, and humor.
She loved the Lord and served at many churches throughout her life. She was a long-time member of Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist Church in Crystal Springs,MS. She taught Sunday school for many years and was always ready to share her testimony and God with anyone she could.
Freeda was an exceptional seamstress making clothes, costumes and many other items made with love that she shared with so many. She also had a love of cooking, gardening, reading, and sharing God and beautiful memories of life and love with everyone. She always had a full house of family or friends and anyone knew that if they went to her home, they would be fed and loved! She loved and served with her whole heart and constantly stayed in prayer for everyone.
She was preceded in death by her faithful husband, Don Smith; parents Earnest and Virginia Patterson; brothers Volley Patterson, Buford “Jim” Patterson, Earnest “PeeWee” Patterson, Hiram “Kenny” Patterson, and Larry Patterson; sisters Shirley Stockett, Jean Smith, and Faye Cook; and many other special family members.
She is survived by her devoted children, Russell Young and wife Brenda of Florence, Susan Smith-Patterson and husband Brad of Madison; grandchildren Brandy Weber of Richland, Brian Young and wife Allyson of Florence, and Thomas Patterson of Madison; great-grandchildren Christian Weber, Logan Weber, and Peyton Weber; sister Virginia Sojourner of Terry; brother Calvin “Butch” Patterson and wife Rachel of Terry; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A private family service will be held November 18, 2021 at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS.
