Obituary for Francis Julian Carroll, Jr.
Francis Julian Carroll, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 3, 2021. He was born on May 14, 1930, in Jackson, Miss.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francis Julian Carroll and Georgie Chichester Carroll and grandson Matthew Garrett Uithoven.

Julian attended Jackson’s Central High School and graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in Industrial Engineering, and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity .Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant serving as a senior communications and cryptographic intelligence officer. He was stationed at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he met, fell in love and married a young Lieutenant Flight Nurse, Billie Mae (Jinx) Garrett, from Dallas, Texas.

After their honorable discharge from the Air Force, Julian and Jinx moved to Jackson, MS, where he enjoyed a long career in insurance and real estate development, ultimately running Carroll & Carroll, Inc., along with his brother, Bob, and dear family friend, Laura Lavinghouze.

Julian was a longtime member of Saint James Episcopal Church, where he served multiple terms as Sr. Warden, Jr. Warden, and Vestry member. He was a proud member of The Rotary Club of North Jackson where he led the classification system for many years, was a Paul Harris Fellow and was named a lifetime honorary Rotarian.

Julian treasured his family, his many friends, Fat Tuesday’s lunches, playing tennis, and of course his deep love of flying. Some of his greatest memories are those of family skiing and beach trips, sailing trips with the “Misadventurers” crew, and of course the annual Oshkosh Airshow. Quick to praise and a sincere listener, Julian displayed honor in every aspect of his life. His handshake and word were unbreakable bonds. Always putting others first, Julian was intentionally curious to learn and was the master storyteller. He was an accomplished craftsman and his tech-savvy skills were something to admire. Julian was often seen walking on Dogwood Drive, carrying tools to help a friend with plumbing repairs or tech support for their electronic devices.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Billie Mae (Jinx) Garrett Carroll, his children Susan (Joe) Uithoven of Brandon, Julian Carroll, IV, of Tupelo, and Jeanne (Craig) Parks of Austin, Texas, brothers William Carroll (Diane) of Yazoo City, and Bob Carroll of Jackson, and many nieces and nephews.

“Da” was an amazing grandfather with a deep love and interest in his grandchildren’s lives. He was well known for his many creations including the backyard “Da swing”, Zipline, trike train, tractor wagons, the Pedal Eagle and more. Da and Nana were deeply involved in their grandchildren’s lives, attending countless activities, games, graduations and more. He was cherished by his grandchildren and great grandchildren including Luke (Lindsey, Hatch, Jack) Uithoven of Greenwood, Garrett (Chelsea) Uithoven of Horn Lake, Rivers (David, Sam) Luter of Madison, Russell (Becca, and soon to be born, Bowen) Parks of Cedar Park, Texas, Georgia Parks of Austin, Texas, Leigh Parks of Austin, Texas, and Annaleise Carroll of Tupelo. His legacy also includes “grandfathering” many of his grandchildren’s friends and cousins.

A celebration of Julian’s life will be held at Saint James Episcopal Church in Jackson on March 8, 2021 at 9:00AM, followed by internment at Lakewood Memorial Park to be officiated by Reverend David Elliott. Due to the Covid pandemic, in-person attendance will be limited to family, but we invite you watch the livestream at https://www.facebook.com/stjjax.org/ (St. James' Episcopal Church Facebook Page)

Special thanks and deep gratitude are extended to his longtime doctors Dr. Al Steele and Dr. Clay Hayes and their staffs, the St. Dominic’s Hospital 2nd Floor Cardiac Care Unit, and Hospice Ministries for their compassionate care. Also, though for only three weeks, Pat Greenfield, Jason Buckley and Carolyn Wright provided invaluable care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Palmer Home for Children, Columbus, MS.
