Obituary for Evelyn Stout McGee
Evelyn Stout McGee passed away on Sunday January 9th, 2022, at St. Catherine’s Village. She was born in Plant City, Fl. May 4th, 1927, to Edna Johnson Stout and Milo Norton Stout. She and her family moved to Hammond, Louisiana when she was less than 3 years old. She was educated in the public schools of LA and later graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and Louisiana State University. Her lifelong love of education was instilled at an early age, and she taught in public schools of Louisiana for 42 years, mostly 5th grade. She was beloved by her community, having taught generations who became mayor, bankers, plumbers, and strawberry farmers. She was an enduring supporter of her alma mater of Southeastern Louisiana, where a scholarship has been set up in her name.

On August 10, 1954, she married John LeRoy McGee. Their daughter Jean McGee Miller is their only child. After her husband died in 2001, when asked if she would like to date again, she replied ‘I had the best man God ever gave breath to, what makes you think I’d get that lucky a second time?’ Their first grandchild, Lindsay Miller Cannon, was born on their 30th anniversary. Together, Evelyn and Johnny were pillars of the community. She was a lifelong Lutheran and participated in all church activities, from teaching Bible School to supporting youth education.

Her heart and soul revolved around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who responded to the love of their Gaga. With her husband, she traveled extensively with the Savings and Loan Association. They made friends all over the country. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her only brother, Edward N. Stout.

She is survived by her daughter Jean McGee Miller and husband Jeff of Ridgeland, MS and granddaughter Lindsay Miller Cannon and husband Colby of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and grandson Martin Patrick Miller and wife Austin of Jackson and their two children, Julia and Patrick.
