Ernest Emery Knight, “Ernie”, passed away peacefully in his home on November 25th, 2022, in Madison, MS at the age of 77. Born on June 13, 1945, Ernie was the son of the late Wilbur and Elizabeth Knight. Ernie is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Emily Knight Scarff; son-in-law, James N. Scarff II “Bubba”; and grandchildren, Hayden, Emery, Hudson and Colt.
Born and raised in Jackson, MS, Ernie graduated high school from Riverside Military Academy and graduated college from Louisiana State University (LSU) where he was an active member of the ROTC program. Ernie was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity during his time at LSU. After college, Ernie joined the United States Army and was deployed to Vietnam where he served as a First Lieutenant in the 4th infantry division. He was the Executive Officer of his division providing artillery support in combat. Upon his return home from Vietnam, he served in the Army Reserves as a Captain. Throughout his whole life, Ernie held his time in the Army close to his heart and found it an honor to serve his country.
At an early age, Ernie gained a passion for adventure and became an avid outdoorsman, specifically hunting and fishing. Many of Ernie’s fondest memories were either in a deer stand, duck blind or a fishing boat, especially if he was able to share those times with his family and friends. Ernie also had a great affection for dogs and enjoyed dog training, especially with his last pup, Bella. Ernie’s professional career consisted of banking and later real estate appraising.
A private service will be held with a Celebration of Life for family and friends to take place the latter part of January. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to The Gary Sinise Foundation (https://www.garysinisefoundation.org/donate), a charity serving veterans and their families.
