Obituary for Emily Jane Cain Endris
Emily Endris, 82, passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at The Madison Health and Rehabilitation Center in Madison, MS. Friends and family are invited to attend the visitation Tuesday which will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Canton, MS. Visitation on Wednesday, February 2, will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. also at Sacred Heart. Interment will follow in Canton Cemetery. Emily Jane Cain Endris was born on February 13, 1939 in Jackson, MS. She was the daughter of the late Hilton Cain and Victoria Trolio Cain. Emily grew up in Cameron and Canton, MS. She attended Canton High School, Class of 1956, where she was the secretary of the Senior Class. Through the years she helped organize their class reunions. She attended MS School for Women, Millsaps, and Belhaven where she earned her teaching degree. Later she attended Spring Hill College and earned her Master of Theological Studies. Emily married her husband, John, in 1958. They remained in Canton as active members of the community where they owned and operated White’s Auto Store on the Square. She began teaching at Canton Academy when it was first in the Tent Factory and continued there after the new school was built. In her 15 years at Canton Academy she taught Government, Economics, MS History, Communism, and World History. She started the Patriotic American Youth Club, sponsored numerous classes and the yearbook, and started her famous annual Junior Trip to Washington, D.C. Mrs. Endris wanted her students to actually see what they were learning about. After Canton Academy, she taught Senior Religion and Government at Saint Joseph Catholic School. She taught for several more years at Canton High School before retiring. In her 39 years of teaching Mrs. Endris, Mrs. E, or “EE” as she was fondly nicknamed, set high expectations for her students and was passionate about her profession. Over the past few months during her illness, so many of her former students and colleagues shared their thoughts about her and how she had touched the lives of so many. There were recurring reflections about how she was a second mother to many of them, fiercely loved and respected, and would always take extra steps with each and every student in and out of the classroom. Many said that she had no idea of the number of people she affected and influenced nor the impact she had that helped to shape them into the people they are today. She was described as tough but caring, devoted and loving, strong but kind, and the best teacher they ever had who not only taught about history, but about life. Memories of the Jr. and Sr. trips and their shenanigans abounded. Mrs. E was the “gold standard” of a teacher. She touched countless numbers of young people’s lives through her teaching. Through the years, her hobbies included owning her own picture framing shop, flower arranging, and owning a gift basket business with one of her best friends. She was an avid bridge player, and up until October played Train dominoes weekly with her friends. As a devout Catholic, her faith was of utmost importance to her. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Society and sponsored the CYO, and RCIA candidates through the years. Her faith was a role model for others in the Church. Emily is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John Leonard Endris. She is survived by her son, Craig Endris (Christie) of Canton; daughter, Vicki Endris Moorehead (Larry) of Madison; grandchildren, Macey Endris Hawkins (Colby) of Ellisville, Blake Endris (Mary Margaret) of Birmingham; and Anna Kathryn Moorehead of Madison; and great grandchildren, Mary Blake Hawkins and Caroline Kate Hawkins. Memorials can be made to Canton Academy and St. Joseph Catholic School in memory of Mrs. Endris. Memorials for Canton Academy can be sent to P.O. Box 116, Canton, MS, 39046 and to Saint Joseph Catholic School at 308 New Mannsdale Road, Madison, MS, 39110.
