Obituary for Emily Lewis Smith
Emily Lewis Smith, born September 17, 1949, in Laurel, MS to Marvin “Sonny” and Jane Causey Lewis, passed away on June 18, 2022 after a valiant battle with breast cancer. She spent the early years of her life in Moss Point, MS before attending college at MS Gulf Coast Community College. She graduated from Mississippi State University and later earned her Masters Degree from Mississippi College. While attending Mississippi State, she met and married George Stephen Smith, with whom she shared over 50 wonderful years. They loved in Jackson, MS, where she spent her career as a teacher, most recently teaching kindergarten at Jackson Academy. She loved teaching children how to read. Emily was always ready for any adventure life threw her way, meeting it head on with a smile and an embellished story. A devoted wife, mother, sister, friend, and die hard Mississippi State Bulldog, her greatest joy in life was her family.
Emily was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Michael C. Lewis. Emily is survived by her husband George Smith, her three children, Stephen Smith, Jennifer Rymer (Drew), and Sarah Smith, all of the Jackson area, her brother, David M. Lewis (Bill Card) of Rolling Prairie, IN, and three bonus grandchildren, Landon, Savannah, and Vivian Rymer.
Memorial services will be held on June 25, 2022 at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, MS at 11:00 am with visitation two hours prior to the service. Per Emily’s request, ashes will be spread at her childhood home at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Emily’s name to Northminster Baptist Church (Jackson, MS) Building Fund or the charity of choice.
