Obituary for Ella White Weston
Ella White Weston, age 88, died March 4, 2018, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland where she had served as a devoted Volunteer for 17 years. Ella was a teacher at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School for 29 years. She had previously taught kindergarten at St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School in Shreveport, LA. Born in McComb, Mississippi, in 1929, to John H. White and Ella Neville White, Ella attended McComb High School where she was drum major in the McComb High School Band. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Ole Miss, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, a majorette, and a member of the Ole Miss Band. Ella later attended Mississippi College where she earned a master’s degree in elementary education. She was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary education society, in 1975, the year she earned her degree from Mississippi College. Ella was an Episcopalian and a member of the Chapel of the Cross, where she served as a lay reader, a chalice bearer, and a lay Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Daughters of the King, a lay religious order. Her love for teaching was apparent during the many years she served as a Bible School teacher at the Chapel of the Cross. She also taught adult literacy courses for the Jackson Public Schools, she taught crafts to residents of St. Catherine’s Village, and she served as a volunteer for Contact Teleministry, Inc. Ella’s family and many friends remember her as a person who loved people and loved and lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed swimming, sailing and tennis, all kinds of dancing, playing bridge and bunko, and socializing with friends who included her fellow Red Hatters. She celebrated every holiday and season of the year by decorating her home. She loved traveling, especially with her beloved late husband of 32 years, Larry Weston. William F. Selph, III (Duke), Ella’s son, preceded her in death, as did her brother, John (Bubba) White. She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Selph Davis and husband, Jerry; three grandchildren and their spouses: Scott and Ginny Davis, Stuart and Nikki Davis, and Maggie and Nick Carr. Ella had one precious great-grandchild, Lucy Davis. She also leaves behind one very spoiled dachshund and companion, Greta. A celebration of the life of Ella Weston with requiem mass will be held Wednesday, March 7, at Chapel of the Cross in Madison, at 11 am. Visitation will be held prior to the service in the church parish hall from 9 to 11 a.m., and the service will include inurnment in the Chapel cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chapel of the Cross, 674 Mannsdale Road, Madison, MS 39110, or Hospice Ministries, Inc., 450 Towne Center Blvd, Ridgeland, MS 39157.
