Obituary for Elaine Porch Childress
Elaine Porch Childress, 87, died peacefully at home in Flora surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, April 27th, 2021. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the Flora Cemetery.
Mrs. Childress was born on November 29, 1933, the daughter of the late Leonard and Mattie Porch. Although spending part of her early years in Leland and Flora, her family settled in the Clinton area where she attended the Clinton Public Schools and graduated from Clinton High School in 1951.
On June 13th, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Ben Hawkins Childress. Over the next 60 years of marriage, they raised their family in Flora. Most in the Flora community lovingly knew Mrs. Childress as “Granny”. Mrs. Childress cherished her family and was known as a true caretaker. She was dedicated to her family and always put them first. She never missed any event involving her children or grandchildren.
Mrs. Childress was an excellent cook! For decades, she cooked three meals a day and would feed anyone who walked through her door. She especially enjoyed the outdoors. She was always working in her garden and flower beds or fishing. She also loved birdwatching and kept several feeders for her hummingbirds. She loved to travel and had visited almost all 50 States. Her favorite trips were long road trips with her husband to Oregon, annual visits to Branson or Gulf Shores, and up the east coast to Maine.
Mrs. Childress was a faithful and longtime member of the Flora United Methodist Church. She loved Jesus and was a devout Christian. She will be remembered most as a devoted wife, beloved mother, a loving grandmother and great- grandmother, and a cherished friend.
Mrs. Childress is survived by: her devoted children: Leila Malatesta (John); Leslie Childress (Kathie); daughter-in-law, Tammy Childress, all of Flora; her grandchildren Valerie Bailey (Kevin), Katie Robinson (Jeremy), Kane Childress (Kaysie) and Joan Ulmer (Ben); great-grandchildren Nora Kate Robinson, Rosie Robinson, Gray Robinson, Eliza Bailey, Clara Bailey, Hawkins Childress, and Baby Ulmer due this summer. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Ben H. Childress and her son, Ben L. “Benny” Childress.
