Obituary for Eda Winders Jackson
Eda Winders Jackson, 82, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2021, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS.
Eda was born in her Grannie’s home in Quitman, MS, on February 5, 1939. She grew up in Jackson, MS, and graduated from Provine High School in 1957. Afterward, she attended Mississippi University for Women. She began her professional career in Jackson working for Humble Oil. Later, while working for Kohlmeyer and Company, she met her future husband, Sterling Gray Jackson, Jr., and they were married on August 27, 1966. They would go on to have two children, Gray and Dabbs.
After staying at home with her children for many years, she re-entered the workforce as office manager for Dr. Michael Carter and later, Dr. Richard Poole. She finished out her working years as the receptionist for Hospice Ministries.
She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Eda, or Birdy, as she was affectionately known, had such a joyful spirit and zest for life. Her eyes would sparkle at the mere mention of her four grandchildren. They as well as her children were her pride and joy. Her beauty, grace, faith, loyalty, strength, and perseverance were remarkable and inspiring.
She was a long-time member of Northminster Baptist Church where she taught children’s Sunday school early on and in her later years served on the Fellowship Committee and the Weddings/Funerals/Special Ceremonies Committee.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Henry Winders, and her mother, Eda Dabbs Winders, as well as her husband, Sterling Gray Jackson, Jr.
She is survived by her siblings Henry Winders (Linda) and Sandra Winders Wilson (Buddy); and her children, Gray Jackson, III, and Dabbs Massey (Jeffery); and her grandchildren: Logan Massey, Dylan Massey, Sterling Massey, and Rhodes Massey as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
On Sunday, February 21, at 2:00 p.m., a memorial service will be held at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson followed by an inurnment in the columbarium at Northminster. The memorial service will be live-streamed at https://northminsterbaptist.live. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, actual attendance at both services will be limited to family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Northminster Baptist Church Pastors Benevolence fund, 3955 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, MS, 39211.
