Dr. Robert H. Thompson (“Doctor Bob”) was born in Jackson on February 6, 1939 to Robert Harvey and Mary England Thompson. After returning to Jackson from Fort Carson he served as Assistant Director of Nurseries at University of Mississippi Medical Center, and was a member of the Children’s Clinic, practicing for over 36 years.
Dr. Thompson served as Chief of Pediatrics at Baptist and St. Dominic hospitals, and was instrumental in starting both the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units at Baptist. In 1981 he was President of the Medical Staff at Baptist. In addition he was Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics, and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Outside of his profession Dr. Thompson kept busy, serving on the Board of the St. Mark’s Episcopal Day Care Center while being a volunteer physician at Operation Shoestring Clinics. He was a long time member of the Board of Directors of Mississippi Children’s Home Society, serving two terms as president.
A lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Cathedral “Doctor Bob” was a former Sunday School and Confirmation Class teacher; a member of the Vestry; and a Verger. In the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi, he served as member and President of the Board of Managers of the Duncan Gray Episcopal Conference Center, and was active in the camping program at Camp Bratton-Green; served on the Diocesan Executive Committee for the Diaconate; A licensed Diocesan Lay Reader, Education for Ministry Student, and a member of the Verger’s Guild of the Episcopal Church.
He was a member of the Diocesan Honduras Medical Mission Committee, serving on many medical team trips to that country. He also helped establish the Diocesan Medical Mission to Panama. He made several trips to the post-Katrina medical clinic as a volunteer physician.
He is survived by his wife Olivia Bigger Thompson, children Mary Eleanor Taylor (spouse Kyle) of Roswell, GA; Philip Alexander Thompson, Jackson, MS; Matthew Wyly Feltenstein (spouse Kate Jane), Frederick, MD; Ned Arnold Feltenstein (spouse Taylor), Jackson, MS; and Guy Williamson Feltenstein, New Orleans.
“Doctor Bob” will be remembered not just for his numerous contributions and achievements, but also for his devotion to his family, friends, and the church all of which are unequalled. His youthful spirit carried him into and through life’s crises and set an admirable example for others. His sense of humor would change groans of pain into groans of laughter. Bob and his compassionate heart were equal partners in healing. His generous spirit was boundless. Ole Bob was truly a servant of God.
