Obituary for Dr. Marvette LaRee' Brown-Carroll, MD.
Marvette LaRee’ Brown-Carroll Harvey, LA – Dr. Marvette LaRee’ Brown-Carroll of Harvey, LA departed this life on March 8, 2022. She was born October 12, 1963, in Jackson, MS, the eldest daughter of four children of the late Curtis D. Brown, Sr. and Frenchie McDonald-Brown. Educated in the Hinds County Public School, she graduated from Calloway High School in 1981. She was the first female drum major to lead the Callaway Marching Band in Jackson, MS. Marvette then attended Tougaloo College receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She was selected by the head of the Chemistry Department, Dr. Richard McInnis, to participate in a program at the University of Vermont. Marvette accepted an invitation to participate in a Summer Research Program at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA in 1983. Marvette was a member of the Tougaloo Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Roland Dobard. Her talents were recognized when Dr. Dobard assigned her as a solo performance at that time. They performed a concerts tour in various states concluding with New York City. Marvette truly loved her church family, Greater Bethlehem Temple in Jackson, MS. She had a special love for three friends whom her mother labeled “The Four Musketeers” – Jacklyn Coleman, Melba McNeil, Patricia Sheriff and, of course, Marvette. That love remained dear to her for a lifetime. Marvette had an insatiable love for reading. Her home library was filled with books and other reading material. She also loved music. Her favorite artist was Michael Jackson. As a child she spent many hours with her childhood friend, Wendy Handy, listening to Michael Jackson and Cher, emulating Cher using towels for the long hair. Marvette LaRee’ Brown was married to Dr. Marion L. Carroll, III, a Mobile, AL boy, on July 19, 1986. They met at the University of Vermont in 1984, where Marvette was participating in a summer research program, typical of exceptional students of Science. Marion was a graduate student there at UVM. Much to Marion’s dismay, he found himself compelled to know this woman while Marvette was unaware of his torment. Finally, summer ended and she would return to her native home. Much to his dismay, UVM invited her back to complete her final college semester! Now finding nowhere else to turn, he ended up proposing marriage five months later. She entered New York Medical College the year they were married and became fully engaged in a 10 year education and training program first in Ob/Gyn then in Family Medicine. They managed to cram in a trip to St. Croix, a couple of ventures to California and Texas, made several trips back home to Jackson and Mobile and had a son, Zachary. Arriving in the family home in Harvey LA in 1996, Dr. Marvette Brown-Carroll began her medical practice which required a great deal of time and energy. Striving to be the perfect wife, mother and practitioner began to take its toll. She had a second child Alexis in 1999 who was her heart and soul as she wanted her girl to have the best of everything. Marvette ended her career in 2002 after many health battles and although remaining licensed was never able to return to medical practice. The faithfulness of Marvette in the face of grave odds is worthy of a chapter in the Bible. Although Abraham, Job and John the Baptist are held often as the standard of faithfulness, Marvette must be counted among them as her faith, her confidence and belief that God would provide was unwavering. Although she would never say it, her husband would say there was no one more worthy than Dr. Marvette LaRee’ Brown-Carroll to sit at the feet of the Most High God and to be with Jesus in paradise. Marvette leaves to cherish her memory her dedicated and adoring husband of 36 years, Dr. Marion L. Carroll III, Harvey, LA; son, Zachary L.
