Obituary for Dr. Julian Crowder Henderson
Dr. Julian Crowder Henderson
Jackson
Dr. Julian Crowder Henderson, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 9, 2017 at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson, MS after a prolonged illness. He was surrounded by his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, dedicated father and grandfather, and a caring man.
Born on January 19, 1938 in Lawrenceburg, TN, Julian was the youngest son of Manning Augustus Henderson and Katherine Kent Henderson. He grew up in Littleville, AL, graduating from Deshler High School in 1954, Florence College (now the University of North Alabama) in 1957, and Tulane University School of Medicine in 1961 where he was an active member of Phi Chi Fraternity. While attending medical school in New Orleans, Julian met the beautiful, vivacious Merle Frances Masters and they were married on December 26, 1961. He served as a captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corps at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The young family moved to Jackson in 1968, where Julian co-founded Clinical Pathology Laboratory. He was an esteemed member of the medical staff at Rankin General Hospital, River Oaks Hospital, Women's Hospital, and Hinds General Hospital where he also served as Chief of Staff. Julian served on the board of the Mississippi State Medical Society, where he was also a Vice-President, and also a respected member of several professional medical organizations including College of American Pathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathology, American Society of Clinical Pathology and Southern Medical Association. He retired from practice in March 2001.
A distinguished gentleman scholar, Julian lived by a commitment to grace, honor and humility—a shining example of the ancient Clan Henderson motto Sola virtue nobilitas which counsels "virtue alone ennobles." As selfless as he was kind, Julian remained a faithful servant to his church and community. He delighted in finding the humor in every aspect of life, offering up his signature witty perspective with a broad smile and jovial belly laugh. Above all things, Julian considered his greatest pride, joy, and accomplishment to be his family to whom he gave his steadfast affection and abiding love. A lifelong learner, Julian was a voracious reader and passionate supporter of the arts and music. He enjoyed fishing, especially with his grandchildren, and loved traveling with his wife and friends.
Julian is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of 55 years, Merle, and their three children, Dr. Gregory Stephen Henderson of New York, NY, Mary Henderson Hale (Bradley) of Wilmington, NC, and Katherine Henderson Michalak (Joseph) of Marietta, GA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren— Margaux and Ava Henderson; Alden, Abbey, and Cooper Hale; Henry, Drew and Jake Michalak; and his feisty companion pup, Miss Mittie Magnolia. Also surviving is his elder brother, Gerald Augustus Henderson (Ozell) of Alabama, along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Julian's caregivers for their continued, compassionate attention—Eugene Greenfield and Edward Earl Lewis; his physicians Dr. David Sullivan and Dr. Clay Hays; the nurses, staff, and palliative care team of St. Dominicas Hospital; and Hospice Ministries, Inc.
A memorial celebration will be held at The Cathedral Church of St. Andrew on Monday, June 12, 2017 with visitation at noon and service at 1PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Cathedral Church of St. Andrew and Stewpot of Jackson, and to Hospice Ministries, Inc.of Ridgeland. - See more at: http://m.legacy.com/obituaries/clarionledger/obituary.aspx?n=&pid=185768840&referrer=0&preview=True#sthash.Yg8CKuKk.dpuf
