Obituary for Dr. John Yerger Gibson
John Yerger Gibson, M.D., died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 88 after a brief illness. John was born on November 11, 1933, in Meridian, Mississippi. He graduated from Central High School in Jackson, MS in 1950 and attended Louisiana State University where he served in the Army ROTC. At LSU, he met his lifelong love, Dorothy Stuart Liles. at St. Albans Episcopal Student Center. They were married on June 11, 1960 at St. James Episcopal Church in Jackson.
John Gibson attended medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He did his internship in Tampa, Fl. On return to Jackson, he was called to voluntary service in the Army at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He then served at The Field Clinic in Centreville, Mississippi for three years. On his return to Jackson, MS, he entered residency for radiology. In 1975, he trained in sonography and founded the ultrasound department at UMMC, where he worked for 30 years. His greatest joy at the Medical Center was teaching.
In addition to being a fine doctor and teacher, John was a practicing artist who won awards for watercolor and pen-and-ink drawings. He continued his pointillism art throughout his retirement. In 2017, he published his first novel, Into the Silence. He also wrote a history of St. James Episcopal Church. Living in Beau Ridge Independent Living facility, John led Bible Study on a monthly basis. John enjoyed reading about astrophysics and having intelligent conversations with his friends.
John Y. Gibson is preceded in death by his parents Tom Lawrence and Gene Guilbert Gibson, brothers Tom Lawrence and Tom Guilbert Gibson. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Dorothy Liles Gibson and three children, Margaret Gibson Simon (Jeff), John Hunter Gibson (Kara), and Elizabeth Gibson Saxena (Tinka), seven grandchildren Margaret “Maggie” Simon LeBlanc (Grant), Katherine Simon Andry, Martha Liles Simon (Paul Napolitano, Jr), Kaely Gibson, Ainsley Gibson, Taylor Saxena, and Jack Saxena, three great-grandchildren Leo and Stella Leblanc, and Thomas Andry.
Funeral services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church at noon on Friday, May 6, 2022. Visitation begins at 10:30 AM in Fowler Hall at St. James until time of service. Interment will be in the Columbarium inside the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. James Episcopal Church or Hospice Ministries, Inc.
