Obituary for Dr. James Oliver Manning, M.D.
James Oliver Manning, M.D., passed peacefully on Sunday, May 27, 2018. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 6, 1929, to James Oliver Manning, Sr., and Doris Jordan Manning. He attended Duling Elementary, Bailey Junior High, and Central High School. He graduated from Ole Miss. While at Ole Miss he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, serving as Number 1. Shortly after finishing at Ole Miss, he married Sudie Anne McCool of Jackson. June 2, 2018, would have been their 67th anniversary. He then joined the U.S. Air Force.
After his Air Force service, Dr. Manning went to medical school at Tulane University. He completed his residency and internship in Shreveport, Louisiana, and practiced one year at the Highland Clinic in Shreveport before happily returning home to Jackson to join Central Orthopaedic Clinic.
Of his many accomplishments, he was most proud of raising four children with his wife Sudie (who he said did more than her share of the raising) in a Christian home. He was active in First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, teaching Sunday school, and serving as Chairman of the Diaconate.
Dr. Manning was well known and loved by the many people he treated and worked with as an orthopaedic surgeon. He co-founded Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center and performed the state’s first total knee replacement. He was the Chief of Staff of Mississippi Baptist Hospital, President of Mississippi Orthopaedic Society, President of Board of Trustees Mississippi Medical Society, Chairman of MMPAC, and was inducted into the Clinical Orthopaedic Honorary Society. He was also inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame for services to amateur football and was made an honorary member of the Mississippi Association of Coaches for meritorious services. He was also inducted into the Mississippi Athletic Trainer’s Hall of Fame.
Dr. Manning loved life and gave his all in every endeavor. He was an avid runner and completed the 1987 New York Marathon while wearing a Mississippi shirt. He loved to tell a good story and said that Mississippians all over the city cheered him on.
Dr. Manning helped make a lasting impact on education in Mississippi by serving as a founding board member and President of Jackson Preparatory School. He was a loyal and proud Ole Miss fan and served as the President of the Hinds County Ole Miss Alumni Association. Additionally, he was involved in River Hills Tennis Club and served as Club President and was the president of the board of Mynelle Gardens and a member of the founding board of River Oaks Hospital.
Dr. Manning is survived by his wife, Sudie, his children James Oliver Manning, III, Dr. Edward Manning (Toni), Anne Manning Cunningham (Bob), and Mike Manning (Lelia); grandchildren Amanda Manning Markow (Majure), Dr. Jim Cunningham, Dr. Kate Cunningham Cranford (Alden), Walker Manning (Anne Elise), Emmett Manning (Kesler), Betsy Cunningham, and Marion Manning; and great grandchildren Manning Markow, Liam Cranford and Sudie Markow; McCool nieces and nephews in Baton Rouge and Oxford; friends too numerous to mention.
