Obituary for Dorothy Poore "Dotte" Cates
Dorothy Poore Cates (“Dotte”) escaped from her mortal body and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 26, 2020. She had battled Parkinson’s disease for twenty three years.
Dotte was born August 19, 1929 in Laurel, Mississippi, to Dorothy Louise Cranford and Homer J. Poore. She grew up in Mobile, Alabama, and attended Raphael Semmes Grammar School. After moving to Hattiesburg, she graduated from Hattiesburg High in 1947. She attended Mississippi Southern College and New York University, and she graduated from John Robert Powers School of Modeling in New York City, where she was a professional model. Dotte married Edward Lawson Cates in 1955 and moved to Jackson. Dotte and Ed had one daughter, Dorothy Louise “Buttons” Cates Marchetti in 1962.
Dotte was very active in First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, where she taught fourth grade Sunday school. She was a member of Judge Leon Hendricks’s Sunday school class. Dotte had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed singing in the choir for over fifty years. Dotte was a member of the Rebecca Cravat Daughters of the American Revolution. She was involved in many clubs, including One O’Clock Luncheon Club, Heirloom Antique Club, and Palladian Club. She was an organizing member of the Hinds County Lawyers’ Wives Association. She was active in the Mississippi Symphony League and the Mississippi Opera Guild.
Dotte is fondly remembered for her fierce loyalty to her family and friends, and her many acts of service and kindness to others. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and in times of distress, many people received one of her famous five-flavored pound cakes. She loved to give gifts of all kinds. She excelled at sewing, needlepoint, and thread count.
Dotte is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer J. Poore; her brothers, Charles Edward Poore and William J. Poore; and her husband, Edward L. Cates. “Grandotte” is survived by her daughter Buttons Cates Marchetti (David) and her grandchildren Lawson David Marchetti, Neil Pryor Marchetti, and Meriwether Louise Marchetti, as well as many friends. She will be missed.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church, 1390 North State Street, Jackson. Interment will be private in Lakewood Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, for the choir fund or for the Twin Lakes Conference Center ministry.
