Obituary for Dorothy Slaughter Young
Dorothy Young was called home on Thursday, April 18,2019. She received her upbringing in the Tougaloo community. She was born November 19,1929 in Jackson, Mississippi to the late Ernest and Carrie Davis Slaughter. To this union, Dorothy was the third born of eight children.
Dorothy attended Tougaloo Preparatory school, inspired to further her studies, she received her undergraduate degree from Tougaloo college, later acquiring her Master’s Degree from Mississippi college, in biology and botany. Beautiful sweet Dot was married to Fletcher Young. They was blessed with two sons Dias A. Young (Carolyn), and Jeffery Young. Dorothy’s entire work history was centered around the public school system giving encouragement and enhancing many children’s lives. Some of the schools she served included Terry High, Lanier High, and Callaway High School. She always valued education and inspired her students to learn. Dot enjoyed teaching Biology and Botany.
One of her passions was making quilts, giving them away and she loved ones , in particular Aunt Elma Harper, Aunt Lucy and sister Marie until their deaths.
Precious Dot was a member of Farish Street Baptist Church.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her loving memories are her sons, Dias Young and Jeffery Young; sisters, Lucille Slaughter, of Jackson and Kathrine Slaughter Akons, of Chicago. She also leaves to cherish her memories her Grandchildren: Paige Chandler, Denise Chandler, Alex Claybon, Jason Young, and Jade Young; one great grandchild, Jaden Roberts; also left to cherish her memories are a host of other relatives and lifelong friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Young, her parents, Ernest, and Carrie Slaughter; brothers: Webster Slaughter Sr., Ernest Slaughter Jr. and Elijah Slaughter; sister, Marie S. Fouche.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: The Slaughter family wish to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your prayers, Telephone calls, cards, flowers, food, and whatever blessings you have bestowed upon us, we pray that GOD will restore to you, in blessings twofold. When hearts ache and bodies are weak from the loss of a loved one, it is only through our ability to lean on God, and with the strength and encouragement of friends like you that will allow us to make it through.
