Obituary for Donna "Jan" McDonald Hopkins
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Donna Janine “Jan” McDonald Hopkins of Madison, MS, on March 9, 2021, at Select Specialty Hospital in Jackson, MS. She was 67 years old.
Jan was born August 2, 1953, in Columbia, SC, to J.C. “Sonny” McDonald and Mary Frances Hutchison McDonald of Kosciusko, MS, while her father was stationed at Fort Jackson.
Raised in Kosciusko, Jan and her family moved to Jackson, MS, in the fall of 1967. In her youth, Jan was very athletically inclined, enjoying softball, volleyball, and tennis. She graduated from Murrah High School in 1971 and attended Mississippi State University the following year.
Jan’s career covered a wide range of industries, from office secretary for governmental agencies, insurance executives, banking executives, medical clinics, and nursing home managers to an elementary school teacher's assistant for Madison County Schools. Jan was also an involved member of the Jackson Jaycettes (affiliated with the Jackson Jaycees) serving on or heading numerous committees and projects.
As an active young mother, Jan was an ardent supporter of her sons and their many extracurricular interests. She spent countless days and nights at a ball field supporting one of their many teams and chaperoning band trips. She loved her son's friends as her own and enjoyed keeping up with them as they started their own families.
Jan played an active role as a member of Twin Lakes Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school attendee, pre-school teacher, and a member of the choir.
Loving, kind, and funny, Jan was a blessing to her family and made her friends feel like family. A beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her most cherished role was as Gabi (grandmother) to her five grandchildren, each of whom she loved to the moon and back.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Gram Hopkins; Sons: Jared Hopkins (Spouse: Cristin) and Justin Hopkins (Spouse: Kristy); Sister: Becky McDonald Kennedy (Spouse: Norman); Brother: Tony McDonald (Spouse: Daniela); Grandchildren: Jaycie, Krissah, Karli, Jovey, and Charlie.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Ideally, when gathering, loving, and hugging are once again second nature. The way Jan would have wanted.
Memorial Donations may be made in Jan’s name to the Twin Lake Baptist Church 673 Lake Cavalier Road, Madison, MS 39110.
