Obituary for Donald Leon Gaddis
Donald Leon Gaddis, beloved husband, uncle and friend, passed away on March 7, 2018. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2018 at Sebrell Funeral Home, with visitation starting at 10:00. Burial will follow at the New Palestine Cemetery in Picayune.
Mr. Gaddis was born in Raleigh, Mississippi on March 13, 1933, the son of the late Barney Leon Gaddis and Gay Hortense Phipps. He attended Ole Miss, where he liked to say he majored in “blondes, brunettes and redheads.” A skilled photographer, Mr. Gaddis owned Southern States Images, and for 30+ years he photographed the Mississippi Bar Association, the University of Mississippi Medical School, and the Mississippi College School of Nursing, plus he travelled across the United States as the official photographer for the Cinderella Beauty Pageants. Known for his love of hunting and fishing, Mr. Gaddis was a charter member at Karnac Hunting Club and prized his time duck hunting at his camp on Chotard Landing. He was also a noted golfer who enjoyed playing on courses throughout the U.S. and in 1952 won the Mississippi Junior Amateur Golf title. His humor, kindness and gift of developing unique nicknames for friends and family will be missed. While Mr. Gaddis and his wife Bobbie were never blessed with children of their own, they delighted in many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Barbara K. Gaddis, nephew Eddie Gaddis, and beloved aunts Doris McGeehee and Nita Kobzeff.
Survivors include sister Becky Curtis, brother Dale Gaddis (Frances), nephew Bo Gaddis (Kim), niece Lynn Gaddis Wade, brother-in-law Wayne Alsobrooks, great-niece Charity Lusteck (Patrick) and cherished friends Ed and Wava Peters.
A special “thank you” goes to devoted caregivers Joe and Bonnie Guise who brought love and companionship to Uncle Don over the past year and a half.
