Obituary for David Lane Dinkins
David Lane Dinkins passed away peacefully in his home on July 11, 2016 after a several years of battling heart and lung disease. He was born December 3, 1944 in Jackson, MS to Anne and Jack Dinkins. His families were from Canton and Flora, MS where he loved spending time as a boy. Lane attended St. Andrews Day School, Bailey Jr. High School and graduated from Murrah High School, class of 1962. After a stint at Hinds Junior College, he went to work at Werlein’s for Music in Jackson, where he spent 9 years. After Werlein’s, he worked for Duggar-Hickman Music Center and Mississippi Music. From selling music he moved into creating it as a manager, session musician, and production engineer at The Mississippi Recording Company, where he worked to engineer many of Jackson’s most memorable commercial jingles. The next stop in Lane’s life took him to a sales position at Sound and Communications, Inc. from where he retired after 30 years of employment. Lane began his life-long love of music when he taught himself how to play the drums at age 9. He loved rock ‘n roll and while in high school, joined Hoppy Bennett and The Esquires. The Esquires had several local hits including the song ‘Smoking is Bad for You’ which broke onto the national scene in 1964, the year the Surgeon General declared for the first time that smoking was indeed bad for you. Lane was very involved in the Jackson music scene starting in the 1960s up until 2000. He played with the Ed and Harriet Butler Trio, Jerry Puckett Trio, Crossroads, Jimmy Mullen Big Band, and the Knight Bruce Trio. He played with Tony Bennet at a Jackson fundraiser and played with many more talented musicians in and around Jackson. Lane was associated with many well-known recordings, musicians, and song writer friends, several of whom went on to be successful nationally. Lane was the most ‘famous, non-famous’ person you ever wanted to meet! Lane is predeceased by his parents Jack Calhoun Dinkins and Anne Louise Lane Roberts and his late wife Sherry Derrick Dinkins. He is survived by his loving wife Catherine Shackelford Dinkins; daughters Shannon Dinkins Garfield (Mike) (Jacksonville, FL) and Juliet Dillinger (Madison, MS), grandchildren William Lane Garfield and Kelsey Anne Garfield, and sisters Angela Roberts Sallis (David) (Bay St. Louis, MS) and Nanette Roberts (Bay St. Louis, MS). Lane was a large personality around the Jackson and Madison areas. As a lifetime resident of Jackson, and then Madison, there was nowhere Lane could go where he did not see a friend or a relative, and he always had a kind word and hello for anyone he met. Lane’s sense of humor and personality shone bright to all who knew him. His many great stories about his lifetime adventures, his love of music, and love of family and life will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank all of the special people at Sta-Home Hospice for the incredible care and compassion they provided to Lane while in their care. Funeral to take place Saturday, July 16th at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS. Visitation from 10:00am – 11:30am followed by memorial service. Burial will be at the Flora City Cemetery directly following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, Lane requested that any memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memphis, TN.
