Obituary for Charles Wilkins Walker
Charles Wilkins Walker died on June 4, 2022, in hospice care at Lakeland Nursing home. Wilkins, son of Louise Wilkins Walker and Thomas Martin (Tommie) Walker was born December 11, 1953 in Jackson, MS.
He was preceded in death by his parents and has a surviving sister, Olivia Russell Elam (Jack), nephew Kip Russell (Gina) and 2 grandnephews, Trace and Preston Russell, and a niece Dee Russell Hunter (Steven).
At the age of 7, Wilkins contracted St. Louis encephalitis and 3 months later he developed Rhys Syndrome which destroyed the motor area of his brain and left him predominantly paralyzed with only limited ability of his left arm and hand.
Although he was not able to attend public schools, he graduated from high school and earned hours of credit from Southern Miss. Due to his curious mind, Wilkins read avidly, ‘visited’ the world via the internet, and remained sharp as a tack until his body left the earth. Despite his physical limitations, Wilkins kept a twinkle in his eyes and exuded positivity, graciousness, and left many chuckling with his priceless sense of humor.
Wilkins was a true servant of Jesus. He deeply impacted lives and hearts of others by showing them how to be thankful for one’s blessings even though he couldn’t walk and was deprived from a normal life. He never complained, never met a stranger, and prayed for each person he met. There is no doubt as to why God kept him on this earth for such a long time. The Lord used Wilkins’s selfless spirit and soul to show people how a Christian should live their life. Wilkins is now singing with angels, dancing like no one is watching, and seeing Christ’s face unveiled. In Heaven, his perfect body allows him to live freely, laugh often, and continue to pour love and prayers over those left behind.
A funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 17, 2022, at St James' Episcopal Church Jackson, MS, following a visitation at 12:00 pm in Oakridge Hall. Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Wilkins memory may be made St James' Episcopal Church, 3921 Oakridge Dr., Jackson, MS 39216
